69% of Greeks want a change in government

New GPO survey records a major shift in Greek politics: almost 7 out of 10 citizens want a change in government after the elections.

Almost 7 out of 10 Greek citizens want a change of government after the next elections, new poll shows GPOconducted for a TV channel Star. At the same time New Democracy retains first place, but its political ceiling is increasingly reaching below 30%.

A new picture of Greek politics is emerging with the emergence of two new parties: ΕΛ.Α.Σ. Alexis Tsipras And “Hope for Democracy” Maria Karistianu. It is these projects, according to the survey, that change the balance of power both in the center-left and in the protest electoral field.

The main political signal of the study is not only a decline in trust in the authorities, but also a direct request for a change of cabinet. When asked what the government should look like after the elections, 69.1% respondents answered that they would like the election of a different government. Government continuations New Democracy led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis want 27.5%.

The new democracy is the first, but without the same confidence

Intending to vote New Democracy remains in first place with 25%. However, in voting estimates, the party in power rises only to 28.6%which actually shows limited growth margin. For a party that until recently laid claim to the image of a uncontested force, this is no longer a comfortable leadership, but rather maintaining a position against the backdrop of voter fatigue.

The new party is in second place in voting intentions ΕΛ.Α.Σ. Alexis Tsipras With 13.2%. In the voting evaluation she receives 15.1%immediately establishing himself as the main new player in the opposition field.

PASOK takes third position: 10.8% intending to vote and 12.4% in assessment. Coming fourth “Hope for Democracy” Maria Karistianu With 9.2% in intention and 10.5% in voting evaluation.

Followed by “Greek Solution” With 7.8% intending to vote and 8.9% in assessment, CNG With 7.5% And 8.6%and also “Course of Freedom” With 4.1% And 4.7%.

Below the parliamentary threshold of 3% are Measure25 With 2.5% in voting evaluation, “Voice of Reason” With 2.4%, “Victory” With 1.6% And SYRIZA With 1.3%. For SYRIZA this figure looks almost like a political obituary: the party that recently ruled the country, in its new configuration, turns into an electoral shadow of its own past.

Where do Tsipras and Karystiano get their votes from?

According to the study, the party ΕΛ.Α.Σ. Alexis Tsipras most strongly pulls voters out of the former left-wing space. Among her potential supporters, a significant proportion comes from SYRIZA — 64.9%from New left — 33.3%from Measure25 — 10.5%from “Course of Freedom” — 9.1%.

“Hope for Democracy” Maria Karistianu collects protest voices from another sector. Most of all, it attracts voters from “Victory” — 25.7%, “Voices of Reason” — 25%, “Greek solution” — 13.2% And “Course of Freedom” — 12.1%.

In other words, Tsipras picks up the debris of the left camp, and Karystiana becomes a point of attraction for part of the protest and anti-system electorate. This is unpleasant news for the old parties: discontent no longer lies unattended, it is beginning to be collected into new political structures.

Who is considered a suitable prime minister?

In the question of the most suitable prime minister, the first place remains Kyriakos Mitsotakis With 26.3%. Followed by Alexis Tsipras With 15.1%. Comes third Nikos Androulakis With 8.2%further Kyriakos Velopoulos With 7.3% And Maria Caristianu With 7.1%.

It is significant that 18.7% respondents spontaneously answer: “nobody”. This is perhaps the most honest line of the entire survey: society is not only tired of the current government, but also does not fully see a convincing replacement.

When asked what political force could become an alternative government proposal, ΕΛ.Α.Σ. receives 15.2%, PASOK — 12.4%, “Greek Solution” — 7.8%, “Hope for Democracy” – Also 7.8%, CNG — 4.4%, “Course of Freedom” — 3%. At the same time 29.3% answer: “none”.

Positive and rather positive feelings about the creation of the party Maria Karistianu express 33.6% respondents. In relation to the party Alexis Tsipras this figure is 32.6%.

Editorial comment

This poll shows not so much the triumph of the opposition as the deep fatigue of society with the current political structure. New Democracy remains the first, but no longer looks unsinkable. Its problem is not only in percentages, but in the fact that more and more citizens want not a cosmetic correction, but a change of government.

At the same time, the opposition field remains fragmented. Tsipras trying to come back through a new brand, Karystiana turns public distrust into political capital, PASOK again risks becoming the party of “almost”, and SYRIZA finally loses its former role. The Greek voter, judging by the figures, is already ready to punish the authorities, but is still not sure who to entrust the next key to the office.
