In the case of the murder of 39-year-old Vasilika in Kalamata new details have emerged. The sister of the deceased said that together they prepared a plan for her to leave her 41-year-old husband, accused of murder, but did not have time to implement it.
According to the woman, the accused deprived her of “her only relative after her mother and father.”
Previously “Athens News” have already written about the first data of a forensic examination in this case: more than 40 stab woundsand three strikes were considered fatal. Read more about the background of the tragedy and the first conclusions of experts in the material “Kalamata: 39-year-old was found with more than 40 stab wounds”.
Now the investigation is studying new circumstances: the testimony of relatives, the version of the accused, the protective injuries of the deceased, the behavior of the children at the time of the crime and the possible presence of sedatives in the house.
“We were preparing a plan for how she could leave.”
The sister of the deceased, speaking on television, stated that in recent days Vasiliki had actually been trying to find a way to leave her husband with her children. According to her, they discussed an escape plan together, which was supposed to remain secret.
“We planned her departure together so that no one would know,” said the 39-year-old woman’s sister. She also said that recently Vasiliki asked her husband almost every day: “Let me go with the children, I don’t want anything else”.
According to the sister, for her the deceased was the closest person after the death of her parents. Now the woman has expressed a desire to take care of Vasilika’s two daughters, who were in the apartment at the time of the tragedy.
The husband’s version is questionable
The 41-year-old accused admitted that he struck the fatal blows, but continues to claim that there was allegedly a struggle before that. According to his version, he woke up and saw his wife with a knife in her hands. Then, according to the man, during the struggle he took the knife away from her and began to strike.
However, this version raises serious doubts among the investigation. According to Greek media, the accused does not have characteristic injuries that could indicate that he was defending himself from an attack. He only had an abrasion on his arm, which, according to police sources, does not correspond to a serious attack by the deceased.

The investigation is also checking an extremely important detail: whether the knife could have been placed in the woman’s hand after her death. If this version is confirmed, it could completely destroy the defendant’s line of defense about the alleged previous fight.
Representative ΕΛ.ΑΣ. Constantia Dimoglidoucommenting on the case, stated that forensic evidence and crime scene inspection materials indicate that the 39-year-old woman tried to defend herself. According to her, a person who received dozens of fatal blows and has numerous defensive injuries obviously cannot be considered an attacker.
Dimoglidou also noted that the body of the deceased was in extremely serious condition. In addition to the knife wounds, other blows were recorded, some of which did not reach their target. These data, according to investigators, help restore the dynamics of the attack and check how plausible the accused’s version is.
The children were sleeping in the next room
One of the most difficult and alarming circumstances of the case remains the fate of the couple’s two daughters – girls approximately 6 And 10 years. At the time of the murder, they were in the next room and, according to media reports, continued to sleep, despite the screams heard by neighbors and the subsequent arrival of the police.
It was this circumstance that raised additional questions for the investigation. According to Greek media, a package of sedatives was found in the house. The children underwent medical examinations, including blood tests, to determine whether there might be traces of any substances in their bodies.
At the same time, the police emphasize that final conclusions can only be drawn after medical and toxicological checks. In such cases, it is especially important not to replace the investigation with guesswork: the fact of children’s sleep has been recorded, the version of the possible influence of substances is being checked, but there is no final conclusion yet.
After the tragedy, the girls were taken to a pediatric clinic Kalamata General Hospital. They are under the supervision of specialists and receive psychological support. According to Greek media reports, the children have already been transferred to the care of relatives, and the sister of the deceased has expressed her readiness to take on their further upbringing.
Evidence of chronic violence
Case files increasingly focus on a possible history of long-term domestic violence. Vasiliki’s friends and acquaintances say that she spoke about her husband’s pathological jealousy, constant control, conflicts and cases of violence.
According to people close to the deceased, she was already ready for a divorce and was looking for a way to leave safely. Some acquaintances claim that Vasiliki shared her fears and talked about the difficult situation at home.
Greek media also reported that neighbors had recently heard frequent quarrels. According to them, screams were heard from the apartment on the night of the tragedy. It was reports from neighbors that helped the police arrive at the scene.
The 41-year-old defendant was brought to the prosecutor. A case has been filed against him premeditated murder in a calm mental state, domestic violence and violation of weapons laws. He was given time to testify before the investigator.
Why the “quarrel” version does not explain the tragedy
The number of wounds, protective injuries of the deceased, the absence of serious injuries to the accused and the testimony of those around him force the investigation to consider the incident not as a sudden domestic quarrel, but as a possible final stage of a long-term situation of violence and control.
Particularly important is the question of whether those around him knew about Vasiliki’s intention to leave, whether there were earlier signals of violence, and whether the system could have intervened before the tragedy. The sister of the deceased actually says that a rescue plan already existed. But the woman did not have time to use it.
Editorial comment
This is the case looks less and less like a “sudden family quarrel”as they sometimes try to imagine such tragedies after the murder. If the evidence of jealousy, control, beatings and the woman’s attempt to leave is confirmed, then what we are looking at is not a random explosion of violence, but the final stage of a situation that, apparently, has been developing for a long time.
What is especially scary here is that Vasiliki, according to her sister, was already preparing an escape plan. That is, she probably understood the danger. Did those around her understand her? Were there any signals? Could the police, social services or other agencies have intervened earlier? These questions are inconvenient, but without them, each new story like this turns into another ritual: shock, condolences, TV spots, funerals – and silence until the next victim.
Greece has long needed not only a criminal response after a murder, but a real system of early intervention in domestic violence. A woman who asks “to let her go with the children” should not be left alone with the person she is afraid of. Paper protocols, hotlines and formal campaigns do not help if at a critical moment the victim still has to come up with an escape plan.
It is especially important not to forget about children. Even if they really did not realize what was happening at the moment of the murder, their lives had already been irreversibly changed. Now the task of the state and relatives is not only to ensure a legal investigation, but also to give children protection, stability and long-term psychological support. Because in such cases, the victims are not only those who were killed, but also those who remain alive after this.
