Prada, Gucci and Chanel “from the beach”: the police are on the lookout for counterfeits

In Mykonos police uncovered a network of trade in counterfeit luxury goods. Seized 1,739 counterfeit products with logos Prada, Gucci, Chanel and other brands.

According to authorities, the group turned one of Greece’s most expensive tourist islands into a mobile market for counterfeit bags, wallets, hats and accessories bearing the logos of famous global brands.

The operation was carried out May 27 employees Mykonos Police Units after receiving information and prolonged observation of the activities of the suspects. As part of the case, they were detained four Senegalese citizenswho are suspected of organizing a network for distributing counterfeit luxury goods.

According to police, the group members used rented houses as warehouses where hundreds of counterfeit products were stored. Every day, they loaded goods into cars and drove to popular beaches, tourist areas and recreational areas, where they approached mainly foreign visitors to the island.

According to authorities, the counterfeits were presented to buyers as supposedly original products from famous fashion houses. Some tourists, counting on “bargain buy”paid significant amounts of money for products that were not actually related to the official brands.

This is Mykonian luxury: the sea, the beach, champagne and Gucci, which legally turned out to be not quite Gucci.

What did the police seize?

During the searches, the police discovered and seized a total of 1,739 counterfeit goods. Among them were bags, hats, scarves, wallets and travel bags with logos of famous brands, including Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Hermes, Fendi, Burberry and other brands.

In addition to counterfeit products, the detainees were seized 770 euros. Police believe the money could have come from illegal sales.

According to the investigation, the group’s activities also caused dissatisfaction among official stores of luxury brands operating on Mykonos. Some tourists preferred to buy cheap fakes, sometimes believing that they were purchasing original items at “special price”.

The case has been transferred to the prosecutor

The prescribed administrative sanctions were applied to the detainees. In addition, they were delivered to Prosecutor of the Syros Court of First Instance.

The police continue to check how exactly the network of supply and storage of counterfeit products was organized on the island. For Mykonoswhere luxury tourism has long been part of the local economy, the trade in counterfeit goods remains not only a police problem, but also an image problem.
