Editorial comment

This story looks almost anecdotal only at first glance: engineers came to measure the site, but were faced with the logic “we grazed here – that means it’s ours”. But behind everyday savagery there is a very serious problem: land disputes, old leases, pastures, undocumented usage habits and local ideas about law sometimes turn out to be stronger than documents.

Rethymno: a dispute over a plot of land ended in an attack on engineers

Cretan katsuna can be part of tradition, a symbol of rural life and shepherd culture. But when it is encountered by engineers performing professional work, this is no longer folklore, but a criminal matter. Land conflicts should be resolved by documents, courts and the cadastre, and not by a staff to the head. Although some still think that ownership is best measured by the length of a stick.
