Athens is preparing a demarche against Kyiv because of a drone near Lefkada

Athens preparing diplomatic actions regarding Kyiv after receiving a report on a maritime drone found near Lefkada.

Document prepared Γενικό Επιτελείο Εθνικής Άμυνας (ΓΕΕΘΑ, General Staff of National Defense of Greece) And Εθνική Υπηρεσία Πληροφοριών (ΕΥΠ, Greek National Intelligence Service), was transferred to Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών (Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis raised this issue at the informal council of foreign ministers EU V Limassol. He informed the High Representative EU on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kayu Callasand also discussed the topic with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ukraine Andriy Sibigainvited to the meeting by the Cypriot Chairmanship.

According to Greek media, since the device is considered to be a drone of Ukrainian design, a diplomatic demarche from Athens to the Ukrainian government is expected in the coming days. The situation for Greece is extremely inconvenient: we are not talking about a theoretical dispute between experts, but about a military naval drone that ended up off a Greek island and, according to previous reports, was carrying explosives.

What does the conclusion say?

According to published information, in custody ΓΕΕΘΑ And ΕΥΠ it is said that the maritime drone lost orientation due to a technical malfunction in the navigation systems. Experts described in detail the technical characteristics of the device, but were unable to establish the exact launch point and final goal.

A separate detail raises questions: according to the analysis, the drone, judging by the amount of remaining fuel, did not cover a very long distance. This makes the story even more sensitive. If the device really did not come from afar, the question arises of where exactly it was launched, what route it should have taken and why it ended up at Lefkada.

At the same time, technical analysis reportedly does not give a completely unambiguous answer to the question of whether the drone was directly Ukraine. This is important because previously the Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias publicly stated that the found naval drone was Ukrainian, calling the incident extremely serious.

Why did the matter become diplomatic?

For Greece The problem goes far beyond the origin of a particular device. If a military naval drone with a warhead can lose control and end up off the Greek coast, this is already a matter of safety for shipping, tourism, civilian infrastructure and sovereignty.

What’s particularly troubling is that the incident comes as the drone war expands beyond the classic war zone. Maritime drones are increasingly being used against ships, ports and oil logistics. But operations in the Black Sea are one thing, and the appearance of such a device off a Greek island in the Ionian Sea is quite another.

That is why Athens, even remaining an ally of Kyiv within the framework of the common European line, is forced to demand explanations. Ukraine’s support does not mean that Greece should silently accept the appearance of military drones on its shores. Allies must also have boundaries, especially when it comes to explosives, navigation glitches, and the civil sea.
