Greek cadastre has reached the final stage: 99% of the country’s territory already has published cadastral data and code KAEK. Full completion of the project is expected by the end of 2026.
Greek cadastre announced the achievement of an important milestone: after the launch of new publications of cadastral data, it has already 99% of the country’s territory have posted information and National cadastre code number (ΚΑΕΚ). The project, which for decades remained one of the main institutional “unfinished projects” in Greece, has entered the final stretch.
This figure exceeds the target set within Recovery and Resilience Fund. Full completion of the country’s cadastration, according to the official plan, is expected by the end 2026.
Since 2019 Ελληνικό Κτηματολόγιο (Greek cadastre) accelerated cadastral procedures and data publication through legislative changes, digitalization of services, stricter control of contracts and simplification of procedures for citizens and specialists. In a country where real estate has lived for too long in a world of paper certificates, verbal explanations and the eternal “come back next week”, this is indeed a serious step.
What does publication of cadastral data mean?
Publication of data is one of the key stages of the cadastral procedure. At this stage, property owners can see the collected information about their properties for the first time, check its correctness and, if necessary, submit a request to correct errors.
Through digital services Greek cadastreincluding map maps.ktimatologio.grcitizens can search for their real estate properties and view published information in a unified digital spatial information environment. In addition, access to real estate data is provided 24 hours a day using codes Taxisnet.
This is important not only for owners, but also for the real estate market as a whole. More accurate cadastral data increases the legal security of transactions, reduces the risk of disputes over plot boundaries and makes real estate registration more transparent. At least in theory. Practice, as usual, will test the strength of beautiful digitalization.
What remains to be done
Despite reaching the 99%the work is not completed. In the near future Greek cadastre should focus on several areas:
- completion of work under existing contracts;
- settlement of remaining cadastral debts and controversial cases;
- completion of special cadastres;
- the country’s complete transition to a functioning digital cadastre.
The official plan provides for the completion of the general cadastration of Greece to the end 2026in accordance with national planning and program commitments “Competitiveness”.
Editorial comment
For Greece, the cadastre is not just a technical database. This is the foundation of a normal real estate market, the protection of property and the fight against the chaos that has accompanied the registration of land and objects for decades. A country where it was possible for years to find out where exactly the border of a site lies and who actually registered what, has long needed a unified digital system.
But 99% of published data is not the end of the story.. The real test will begin where citizens are faced with errors, corrections, inheritance disputes and registration of transactions. If the digital cadastre speeds up these processes, it will be a real reform. If the old bureaucracy simply moves to an electronic interface, citizens will get the same labyrinth, only now with a password from Taxisnet.
