In the Aegean Sea tensions were recorded again: Greek fighters intercepted armed Turkish F-16 after a series of violations.
Tensions over the Aegean Sea again made itself felt: Greek fighters on duty were scrambled to intercept Turkish planes entering FIR Athens without filing flight plans.
According to Greek media reports, citing Γενικό Επιτελείο Εθνικής Άμυνας (ΓΕΕΘΑGeneral Staff of National Defense), the incident involved a pair of armed Turkish F-16as well as two aircraft CN-235. Turkish aviation operated in the areas of the northeastern and southeastern parts of the Aegean Sea.
According to these data, Turkish planes entered FIR Athens without pre-filed flight plans. During their passage, violations of air traffic rules and violations of the national airspace of Greece were recorded.
Total reported 10 violations Greek airspace. The main part, according to sources, came from Turkish CN-235the rest – for fighters F-16.
In one case, Greek and Turkish fighters found themselves in a situation conditional air combat. That is, we are not talking about the use of weapons, but about the standard interception and maneuvering procedure for such episodes, when pilots test each other’s nerves for strength. The skies over the Aegean Sea are, as usual, being used by some neighbors as a geopolitical training room.
The Greek aircraft were reported to have carried out identification and interception in accordance with international regulations. Such episodes are nothing new for Athens: Turkish aviation activity in the Aegean Sea regularly becomes a source of tension between the two countries.
The peculiarity of the current incident is the participation of armed Turkish F-16. Formally, such flights can be presented by Ankara as normal activity, but for the Greek side, the appearance of armed aircraft without coordinated flight plans in sensitive areas of the Aegean Sea looks like direct pressure.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing modernization of the Greek Air Force, procurement Rafaleupdates F-16 Viper and future receipts F-35such episodes again remind us: the military balance in the region remains not a theory for analysts, but the daily practice of pilots on duty.
The Aegean Sea has long been a space where diplomacy and air power come too close to each other. During the negotiations, the parties talk about calm, good neighborliness and a reduction in tension. In the air, everything looks simpler: one plane enters without a flight plan, the other takes off to intercept. This is the regional version of “dialogue”, only at speed and with missiles under the wing.
So far the incident has not led to further escalation. But each such episode shows how fragile the situation in the Aegean Sea remains. All it takes is a pilot error, a wrong maneuver or political nervousness – and the next “routine” provocation can become a crisis, which diplomats will then have to put out for a long time.
