According to Greek media reports and footage posted on social networks, the employee T-Centerwho was working at a Euroleague event, quickly walked up to the place where the flag was, grabbed it and tried to take it to the side. All this happened against the backdrop of the interview. Alperen Shengyunplayer Houston Rocketswho was present at the match Olympiacos – Fenerbahce at the site.

The fans’ reaction was immediate. Screams were heard from the stands, some fans began to express outrage, and, according to eyewitnesses, liquids flew towards the employee. The flag was later returned to the fans, and the employee himself allegedly offered an explanation or apology after the remark.

The symbolism in this case was not accidental. Slogan “Freedom or Death” – one of the key historical mottos of the Greek struggle for independence. After the video spread on social networks, dozens of users accused the employee of “neorayagism” — that is, in servility and readiness to give in in advance where Greek national symbols are concerned. The term is harsh and emotional, but this is exactly how part of the Greek audience perceived what was happening: not as a question of Euroleague regulations, but as a political gesture.

The presence of Alperen Shengyun. Greek publications describe him as an athlete known for his pro-Kemalist views. That is why some fans saw in the attempt to remove the flag not the usual work of a law enforcement officer, but a desire not to irritate the Turkish guest.

Formally, organizers of sporting events often try to remove political or nationally sensitive symbols to avoid conflicts in the stands. But here the problem is different: the flag “Freedom or Death” for the Greeks it has a special historical significance, and the moment was chosen so poorly that it will not be easy to explain everything with the usual “regulations”.

In such cases, not only the instructions are important, but also an understanding of the context. In the Greek arena, in front of Greek fans, during a match involving a Turkish club and in the presence of a famous Turkish player, any movement around a national symbol automatically becomes political. It’s surprising, of course, that this still needs to be explained to adults at such events, but civilization in general is developing unevenly.

The incident quickly became a topic of discussion after the basketball night. For some, it was a minor episode, inflated by social networks. For others, it is a symptom of a broader problem: an over-wariness of Turkish sensitivities and a willingness to push aside Greek historical symbolism for the sake of a quiet picture for broadcast.

In any case, the flag story showed that sports in Greece are rarely just sports. Especially when they find themselves on the same site OlympiacosTurkish basketball player, fans, national slogan and employee who decided it was better to remove the flag.

It didn’t turn out better – it turned out louder.
