Greeks received suspended sentence for flag in Hagia Sophia

Court in Istanbul sentenced two citizens Greece To 10 months imprisonment with suspended sentence per share in Agia Sophia (St. Sophia).

We are talking about a 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman who unfurled a flag with double headed eagle and the inscription “Orthodoxy or Death”.

The incident occurred April 9when a group of Greek visitors were in Agia Sophia. According to Greek media, two members of the group demonstrated flag with Byzantine symbol and religious slogan. After leaving the monument and returning to the hotel, they were detained by Turkish authorities.

The Turkish side considered this gesture an insult to a place of special historical and religious significance. The case went to court, which found the two Greeks guilty and sentenced them to 10 months imprisonmenthowever with a delay in execution. This means they will not serve any time unless they commit a new offense within the specified period.

Who was detained

According to Greek publications, we are talking about a woman from Peloponnese and a man who is a Greek from the diaspora. After the decision is made, they do not remain in custody and can return to Greece after completion of the prescribed procedures.

The action itself was recorded, after which the Turkish police began an investigation. For Ankara similar gestures in Agia Sophia have not only religious, but also political significance: the monument remains one of the most sensitive points in the Greco-Turkish symbolic war.

Agia Sophia has again become a political symbol

Agia Sophia It has long ceased to be just a historical monument. After its transformation from a museum into a mosque in 2020 she became one of the main symbols of politics Turkey in relation to Byzantine, Orthodox and Greek heritage. Therefore, even a small gesture inside the building immediately turns into a diplomatically sensitive episode.

Phrase “Orthodoxy or Death” in such a place was deliberately provocative. But the reaction of the Turkish authorities also shows how nervous the topic remains Agia Sophia: one unrolled banner turns into a criminal case, detention and sentence. Geopolitics, as usual, has found a way to fit into a piece of fabric.

Editorial comment

This story cannot be assessed only by cold logic: “Why did they go, why did they turn around, why did they provoke”. For many Greeks Agia Sophia And Constantinople – not a tourist point on the map, but part of lost historical memory. People go there not only to see the sights, but also to see the city from which families were expelled, where ancestors lived, where houses, temples and pain remained, which cannot be covered by diplomatic protocol.

Yes, flag gesture “Orthodoxy or Death” I was in such a place obviously risky. But such actions are often born not out of calculation, but out of faith, memory and the inner need to declare oneself where history was forcibly rewritten. This is not always rational. But faith and historical trauma rarely behave like legal advice at all.

Another thing is also important: the Turkish authorities, with all the political sensitivity of the topic Agia Sophiain the end, they didn’t turn the episode into a big show trial. A suspended sentence is an unpleasant but relatively mild decision. In a different political atmosphere or in other states, such a story could have ended much more difficult.

Therefore, the main conclusion here is twofold. Greeks should understand that Agia Sophia any symbol turns into a political mine. But also Turkey It would be worth remembering: for the Orthodox and Greeks, this place did not become an empty historical building just because Ankara changed its status.

Memory is not canceled by decree. And that is why such episodes will be repeated.
