ΑΑΔΕ is preparing a large-scale call to taxpayers who have overdue debts to the tax authorities. Over the course of a year, the service plans to do at least 55,000 callsand send out hundreds of thousands of email notifications.
Officially it’s called an early warning system. before applying enforcement measures. Simply put, the tax office wants to contact debtors in advance – before it comes to seizing bank accounts, blocking property and other unpleasant joys of dealing with the state.
First of all attention ΑΑΔΕ will be aimed at those who have fallen behind on their tax obligations for the first time. The service believes that it is easier to settle fresh debts quickly before they turn into chronic debt, which is then chased through databases for years, like the ghost of Greek accounting.
Who will they call
The list will include taxpayers with new or old overdue debts, as well as those who have stopped paying contributions on already issued installment plans and risk losing the right to regulate debt.
Companies and specialists who have not filed periodic declarations will be separately inspected ΦΠΑ or income tax returns for employees. Those who filed zero returns will also come under attention. ΦΠΑalthough he continued to operate.
Besides, ΑΑΔΕ will track taxpayers who have not filed a real estate return E9as well as small debtors with small amounts that remained for a long time “forgotten” or inactive.
The goal is to collect debt before it becomes a problem.
Main goal ΑΑΔΕ – achieve that no less 60% taxpayers who created overdue debts for the first time returned to fulfill their obligations. In addition, the service expects to collect a minimum 45% such debts before they grow and become difficult to manage.
At the same time, the tax office is strengthening electronic reconciliations. For this purpose, data from myDATAbanks, declarations ΦΠΑincome information, as well as information from foreign tax authorities through the systems DAC And FATCA.
Based on the results of these inspections, it is expected that at least 10,000 acts of administrative determination of tax. Overall plan ΑΑΔΕ on 2026 provides more 184,000 tax and customs audits.
There will be more checks
The operating plan includes 43,000 partial on-site inspections on the market, 26,000 full tax audits, 900 special investigations into fraud schemes with ΦΠΑ And 87,000 customs checks.
Through reconciliations, checks and additional accruals ΑΑΔΕ expects to install at least 1.7 billion euros taxes and fines. That is, the state is not just reminding about debts, but is clearly going to be more active in obtaining money where it considers it not received.
Tax debts continue to grow
The new campaign comes against the backdrop of growing overdue debts to the tax authorities. In the first quarter alone, new debts appeared by approximately 3 billion eurosof which 2.8 billion euros account for unpaid taxes.
The total number of debtors has reached 4.79 million individuals and legal entities. More 2.3 million taxpayers are already under threat of enforcement, and approximately against 1.68 million Seizures of bank accounts and other measures to block property have already been applied.
The total overdue debts to the tax authorities are 114.516 billion euros. Of these, about 35.264 billion euros recognized as practically uncollectible. The actual volume of overdue debt is estimated at approximately 79.252 billion euros.
Editorial comment
The very idea of early warning seems reasonable: it is better to call the debtor in advance than to immediately go to seize the account. But the scale of the problem shows something else: when almost 4.8 million citizens and companies (half the country’s population) have debts to the tax authorities, this is no longer just a matter of discipline.
It’s a symptom of an economy where too many people can’t keep up with taxes, prices, bills and obligations. The state, of course, finds a person fastest when he owes money. It’s a pity that it doesn’t always appear with the same speed when a person needs help.
