Against the backdrop of Turkish pressure in Aegean Sea Athens withdraw Patriot With Karpathos and they throw two there Mirage 2000-5.
Aegean Sea again becomes an area where a mistake can be very costly. Against the backdrop of Turkish statements about 152 Greek islands, islets and rocks Athens changes its defense presence to Karpathos: systems Patriot are returned back, and instead of them two fighters are transferred to the island Mirage 2000-5.
Formally, we are talking about operational planning and adaptation to new security conditions. In practice, everything looks much less calm: at first Patriot sent to Karpathos and to the area Didimotichothen they return it back, and they try to close the vacated niche with a couple of planes. This is not what a cold strategy looks like. This is what political nervousness looks like, disguised as military flexibility.
According to Naftemporikiafter decision KΥΣΕA from May 18 system Patriot is output from Karpathosand a couple is transferred to the island Mirage 2000-5. This was also reported SKAI And Dnews.
Two planes instead of an air defense system: signal or vulnerability?
The main question is not whether they can Mirage 2000-5 carry out tasks in the Aegean Sea. They can. The question is: what exactly does Athens want to show Turkey by sending two planes to an island that itself needs protection?
Patriot is not an air defense talisman that can be placed on the map and considered the area covered. Such a system only works within a full-fledged layered complex: radars, early warning systems, anti-drone protection, short-range air defense, shelters, logistics, maintenance and communication with the general defense network. Without this, even the most expensive system becomes a fat target.
But two Mirage 2000-5 without a full-fledged infrastructure is also not a magical solution. If on Karpathos there is no sufficient system of air defense cover, shelters, weapons depots, constant technical support and an anti-drone dome, then we are not talking about force, but about demonstration. And demonstrations in the age of drones quickly become targets.
According to information SKAIat the airport Karpathos work is underway to enable it to support longer aircraft stays Hellenic Air Force. This means that it may not be a one-time appearance of a couple of fighters, but an attempt to create a more stable forward point. But then an unpleasant question arises: why does the public picture look like an improvisation, and not like a pre-prepared plan?
Türkiye presses where Athens falters
All these movements occur against the backdrop of a new wave of Turkish statements within the framework of the doctrine “Blue Motherland”. Turkish analysts and media are again talking about 152 Greek islands, islets and rockscalling their status “uncertain”. Essentially, Ankara is trying to turn Greek sovereignty into a bargaining chip – an old method packaged in new maps and television studios.
They write about this line Capital, Liberal And Newsbeast. The meaning of Turkish rhetoric is clear: first name the obviously Greek “controversial”then demand discussion, and then use the very fact of discussion as evidence that the question is supposedly really open.
This is not a diplomatic game for the sake of playing. This is pressure on the nerves, map and reaction time. Türkiye is carefully watching where Athens is acting confidently and where it is starting to rush around. And if the Greek side responds not with a clear strategy, but with a series of poorly explained movements, Ankara gets exactly what it needs: the feeling that it is not facing a solid line of defense, but an administration that is putting out one fire after another.
Greece is right. But law does not protect itself
From a legal point of view, Greece has a strong treaty basis. Treaty of Lausanne 1923 consolidates the regime of the islands off the coast of Asia Minor. Article 12 states that islands located closer than three miles from the Asian coast remain under Turkish sovereignty, unless otherwise provided by treaty. In other words, Türkiye cannot simply declare foreign islands “uncertain”because it’s so convenient for her.
By Dodecanese the legal line is even clearer. Türkiye renounced rights to these islands in favor of Italy, then after World War II Dodecanese was transferred to Greece Paris Peace Treaty 1947. Greece became Italy’s legal successor to these territories. Legally, this design looks much stronger than the Turkish TV cards with their beautiful blue color and bad intentions.
But treaties are not a concrete wall. They work as long as the state is ready to protect them politically, diplomatically and, if necessary, through military deterrence. Türkiye understands this very well. Therefore, it attacks not only legal reasoning, but also Greece’s ability to act without panic.
Drones have changed the rules of the game
The most dangerous part of this story is not another Turkish card or even loud statements. The most dangerous part is the military reality, which Athens has no right to underestimate. Türkiye has become one of the leading manufacturers of attack drones, and modern wars have already shown that drones are capable of breaking conventional defense systems.
Experience Nagorno-Karabakh, Ukraine, Sudan and the Middle East proved: airfields, warehouses, radars and air defense systems can no longer be protected according to the old patterns. Where previously distance and the status of an object were sufficient, now layered defense, camouflage, mobility and constant anti-drone readiness are needed.
That is why the idea of leaving two aircraft at a forward point without a clear public answer to the question of their cover looks alarming. Not because Mirage 2000-5 bad planes. But because even good planes are helpless if the political decision is ahead of the military infrastructure.
The Israeli factor and Ankara’s regional game
In a broader analytical version, Turkish pressure in the Aegean Sea can be seen as part of Ankara’s regional game. Türkiye is trying to show that it is capable of putting pressure on its allies Israel in various locations: in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, Africa and potentially in the Aegean Sea.
You need to be careful here: there is no direct evidence that Turkey’s current actions in the Aegean Sea are an operation against Israel. But the geopolitical logic is clear. Ankara seeks to prove to the Muslim world that it is the one that is capable of speaking the language of power where others limit themselves to statements. And Greece, as Israel’s closest partner in the region, in this design becomes a convenient target for demonstrating pressure.
This does not mean that war is inevitable. This means that Ankara knows how to turn a crisis into a political instrument. And Athens has no right to answer this as if the main thing is to impress the evening newscast.
Editorial comment
Greece has the right. Greece has treaties. Greece has a strong air force. But all this loses some of its force if the political leadership acts as if defense planning is a series of quick gestures to appease the public.
If Karpathos should become a key point of defense of the south-eastern Aegean Sea, it needs to be turned into a real fortified position: with air defense, anti-drone protection, shelters, warehouses, personnel, communications and thoughtful logistics. If they simply send two planes there instead of the ones that left Patriotthen this is not a strategy. This is a political backdrop on a very dangerous stage.
Türkiye is checking not only Greek borders today. It tests the maturity of the Greek state. Tests whether Athens has a cool head, a clear line and the ability to respond not with words, but with a system. Because in the Aegean, the winner is not the one who speaks loudest about sovereignty, but the one who is able to make it inviolable.
