Political project of Maria Caristianu becomes one of the most dangerous for the government Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
IN Megaro Maximou understand: we are not talking about a familiar party figure, but about a person who turned a tragedy Tempi permanent moral challenge for the authorities.
Formalization of a political movement Maria Karistianu increased anxiety in the government camp. As Greek media reported, Karystiana announced the creation of an independent movement back in the spring. “Ξεκινάμε για την Ελπίδα” (“We start for hope”), with which it is expected that she may participate in the next national elections. They wrote about this CNN Greece And LiFO.
According to SKAIa narrow circle of trusted persons has already been formed around Carystianu, and leaks about the structure of the future political project remain minimal. This only increases interest and irritation at the same time: the authorities are accustomed to working with party rivals, and not with a figure behind whom stands a social trauma and a demand for justice.
That’s why for New Democracy This story is more complicated than ordinary election competition. Maria Caristianu is not a classic politician who is easy to attack according to the old patterns: program, career, past deals, party alliances, compromising evidence, statements made twenty years ago. Its political capital is built differently – on tragedy Tempithe loss of a daughter, the struggle of the families of the victims and the feeling that the state has not yet told society the whole truth.
Why is Megaro Maximou worried?
The main problem for the government is that Karystiana is not perceived as part of the old party system. For part of society, she became a symbol not only of pain, but also of the demand for responsibility. In this sense, her possible political project may attract those who do not want to vote for traditional parties, but are looking for an understandable moral point of reference.
According to SKAIin the survey Interview hypothetical project Karystiana was fixed at the level 7.9% and took third place. The same survey was reported by ERTnoting that Νέα Δημοκρατία retains leadership, but Cristianu’s new project is already becoming a noticeable factor in the political scene.
Other estimates include higher potential ranges, from 8% to 12%if the project is organized quickly and convincingly. However, these figures should for now be taken as political assessments and internal scenarios, and not as a stable outcome of the elections. The voter, fortunately or unfortunately for the headquarters, is still not an Excel plate.
“Brand Tempi” as a political problem
Tragedy Tempi remains an open wound in Greek society. For the families of the victims, this is not only a matter of memory, but also a matter of justice, investigation, accountability and trust in the state. In this context Maria Caristianu became one of the most recognizable figures of civil pressure on the authorities.
This is what makes her an inconvenient opponent for Megaro Maximou. A violent attack against her could look like an attack against the bereaved mother and the families of the victims. Tempi. It is also difficult to ignore: the public outcry is too great, and the political demand for responsibility does not disappear.
The authorities may try to present her movement as a protest project without a management program. But the problem for the government is that a significant part of society now votes for more than just programs. She votes against the feeling of impunity. And this is a completely different political chemistry, and the usual recipes do not work well here.
Where might the voices come from?
Potential audience of the movement Karystiana broader than classic leftist or centrist protest. It may affect disappointed voters from the center, center-left, some young voters, people who do not trust traditional parties, as well as some former supporters ΝΔfor which the topic Tempi has become a personal moral boundary.
That is why the government fears not only the growth of a new movement, but also its ability to break the usual electoral lines. If Karystiana is perceived not as another party leader, but as a symbol of civic justice, her support may flow not through ideological channels, but through emotional and moral identification.
This is especially dangerous for New Democracy in conditions where the party is already experiencing pressure from the right, due to a possible project Antonis Samarasand from below – due to high prices, the housing crisis and middle class fatigue. Each new political crack in itself may be small. But when there are a lot of them, the façade begins to behave nervously.
How can the government respond?
According to Greek media reports, Megaro Maximou discussing a cautious strategy: not to attack Karystiana directly and harshly, so as not to enhance her public image, but to try to limit her movement within the framework “protest project”. This makes sense: if some voters can be convinced that the movement expresses pain but does not offer a manageable alternative, its growth can be contained.
Another possible element of the strategy is strengthening ΠΑΣΟΚ as the main systemic rival in the center and center-left space. For ΝΔ It is more convenient to compete with a familiar party than with a new movement that does not yet have the usual political baggage. The old parties at least know where their vulnerabilities are. New projects first have to be studied, like a strange device without instructions.
However, this strategy has its limits. If the public demand for justice Tempi will remain strong, the attempt to reduce Caristiana to a “protest party” may not work. For many voters, protest against the irresponsibility of the state is the first level political program.
New stage of the political map
Appearance of the project Maria Karistianu opens a new stage in Greek politics. Until now, the demand for political change has often sounded like a slogan – familiar, general, slightly worn out from constant use. Now it can get a face, a biography and a tragic moral authority.
This does not mean that the new project will automatically become a major party or be able to turn into a manageable political force. There is a long road between public sympathy and the electoral machine: organization, personnel, program, regional structures, money, media stability, the ability to withstand attacks. Politics loves to turn symbols into bureaucracy and then wonder why the symbols fade.
But even if the Caristianu movement does not become a major force, it is already capable of changing the calculations. A few percentage points could prove decisive for the future parliamentary majority, especially if projects on the right emerge simultaneously, protest voices increase, and government fatigue persists.
Editorial comment
Anxiety Megaro Maximou clear: Maria Caristianu is no ordinary political rival. It cannot be easily attributed to party ambition, ideological niche or personal career. She brings into the public space what the authorities fear most: pain, memory and the question of responsibility for Tempi.
If her movement manages to turn moral capital into political organization, it could become a serious problem for New Democracy and personally for Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Not because he already has a ready-made program for governing the country, but because the Mitsotakis government, through its actions, has created an open wound that will not heal with false promises. And in politics, sometimes it is precisely this wound that turns out to be stronger than any party machine.
