What happened in Termo

According to investigators, the incident occurred in early April. Three men, hiding their faces, entered through an unlocked door into the home of a couple in Thermo and tried to commit robbery, threatening a man with a weapon and using violence against him.

During the attack, the accused were spotted by the couple’s son. After that, they fled, and one of them, according to police, shot twice in the air. There were no reports of casualties as a result of the shooting.

A police operation was organized to arrest the accused. At the transport hub Sykya The police stopped the car in which the female accused was located. Two men were reportedly hiding in the luggage compartment of the car and were detained.

The fourth accused was found at the rented house. When he saw the police, he tried to escape, but was detained nearby. Well, yes, the “hide in the trunk and hope for the best” level plan again failed to pass the common sense certification.

Weapons and charges

During searches in the house and in the lake area Trichonida police found and seized combat rifle with a folding stock, two magazines secured with electrical tape, 57 roundsas well as items of clothing.

Criminal prosecution has been initiated against the accused for attempted robberycommitted by a group of people with weapons, violence against employees and judges, illegal possession and carrying of military weaponsas well as violation of weapons laws.

It is separately emphasized that two men were wanted as fugitives from a correctional facility, and the third man was on scheduled leave from prison. This point raises obvious questions about the control over persons already in the penitentiary system. When a person on leave from prison is involved in a case of armed assault, this is not just criminal news, but a small administrative disaster with a criminal smell.

Editorial comment

Publishing photographs and data of the accused in such cases has a practical meaning: the police are looking for possible new victims and additional episodes. If anyone recognizes these people or has information about similar attacks, it could help the investigation.

But the story itself poses a larger question: how two fugitives and one prisoner on leave ended up in an attempted armed robbery case. Society has the right to demand not only arrests after a crime, but also an explanation of why the control system did not work earlier. Otherwise, the law enforcement machine again looks like it catches the consequences but too often misses the causes.
