Greek Navy submarine caught in fishing nets off Tinos

Submarine Type-214 of the Greek Navy got into an incident with trawler nets between Andros And Tinos. The crew was not injured and no damage was detected.

The first reports in the Greek media said that the submarine’s propellers allegedly became entangled in the nets of a fishing trawler, which is why the crew was forced to surface.

The incident occurred in the area Disvaton between Andros And Tinoswhere the submarine participated in national naval exercises “KATAIGIS 26”. According to Newsitwe are talking about a submarine of the class “Papanikolis” – Greek version of submarines Type-214.

At first, a number of publications reported that the submarine’s propellers got caught in the trawler’s nets, and the situation itself could pose a serious danger. However, later sources Hellenic Navy They gave a more restrained version: the submarine noticed a fishing vessel, moved away, and after contact with the nets the necessary safety checks were carried out. According to Proto Themethe Navy said the submarine did not become critically entangled in the nets and, after inspection, continued to participate in the exercise.

According to information Kathimerinithe nets, in all likelihood, touched the submarine’s hull, but did not hit the propeller. The military vessel stopped temporarily to conduct an inspection. According to the same data, divers arrived at the scene coast guardwho inspected the underwater part and checked whether the trawler’s cables had gotten into the propulsion system.

After checking, it was determined that there was no cause for concern. The submarine surfaced for an external inspection and then continued to participate in the exercises. Sources ΓΕΝ (General Staff of the Hellenic Navy) also reported OnAlertthat the crew is in good health and the submarine continues the program “KATAIGIS 26”.

What is known about the submarine

It is not specified which of the four Greek submarines Type-214 participated in the incident. Included Hellenic Navy there are submarines of this type “Papanikolis”, “Katsonis”, “Matrozos” And “Pipinos”. These submarines are considered one of the most modern units of the Greek submarine fleet.

Submarines Type-214 have an air-independent propulsion system and are designed for covert operations, which makes them an important element of the Greek naval balance in Aegean Sea. That is why any incident with such a fleet unit immediately attracts increased attention: we are not talking about an ordinary boat, but about a strategically important ship.

Why did the incident cause a stir?

The situation looked almost anecdotal: fishing nets and a modern submarine participating in large-scale exercises. But for the Navy, such episodes are no laughing matter. Contact with nets, cables or other underwater equipment can pose a serious risk to maneuver, propulsion and crew safety, especially when the submarine is submerged.

In this case, according to official sources and sources close to the Navy, the worst-case scenario was not confirmed. No damage to the propeller or propulsion system was detected, the crew was not injured, and the submarine continued to perform its tasks. However, the very fact of the incident shows how difficult the navy’s operations remain in areas with intense maritime activity, where warships, merchant ships, fishing vessels and civilian traffic may be nearby at the same time.

National exercises “KATAIGIS 26” are carried out in realistic conditions, which means that naval units of the Navy operate not in a sterile training “sandbox”, but in the real Aegean Sea. And the real Aegean Sea, as it turns out, can add not only a fictitious enemy to the scenario, but also a very real trawl net. Very Greek: even military exercises can suddenly get a fishing amendment.

Editorial comment

The story of the submarine Tinos became an example of how quickly military news can go from an alarming message to an almost everyday explanation. The initial version sounded dramatic: the propellers got tangled, the submarine was forced to surface, and there was a risk. Latest version Hellenic Navy much calmer: contact with networks, checks, absence of damage, continuation of exercises.

But even if the drama of the first reports turned out to be exaggerated, the episode itself cannot be considered a trifle. Underwater navigation in heavily fished areas requires extreme coordination. Any contact with nets or cables can be a problem, especially for complex and expensive military equipment.

Another point is important for society here: in matters of fleet safety, it is better not to rush to sensational conclusions. When it comes to the submarine, the crew, and military exercises, the difference between “got caught in the nets” and “touched the nets, checked and continued the task” is huge. But for headlines, of course, the first version tastes better. The Internet doesn’t eat dry clarifications; give it drama with a side dish.

As of now, the main thing is known: the crew is fine, no serious damage was detected, the submarine continues to participate in “KATAIGIS 26”. And the Navy will probably get another reason to look more closely not only at the imaginary enemy, but also at a completely real fisherman with a trawl.
