Pontic Greeks celebrated Victory Day in Larisa

May 10 V Larisa Greek-Pontic society “O Pontos” held a warm meeting dedicated to the memory of the Great Patriotic War.

May 10 in the city Larisain a building that is dear to many “Zyazya”a cultural society of Pontian Greeks from the former Soviet Union “O Pontos” held a meeting of society members dedicated to the memory of Great Patriotic War And Victory over fascism.

The meeting took place in a warm, almost family atmosphere – drinking tea, talking, stories and memories. The participants recalled the difficult years of the war, the feat of the people, the steadfastness of the soldiers and the great role Red Army in the defeat of fascism. Such evenings are important not only as a tribute to the past, but also as a living connection between generations, which, fortunately, has not yet been replaced by short posts and forgetfulness.

The guests were presented with slides dedicated to the most difficult pages of the war years – the everyday life of the people, the front and the soldiers who bore the terrible burden of the war. The presentation was prepared by representatives of the young and energetic community from “Neolei”showing that the memory of the war remains not only a matter of the older generation.

The performances of the youngest members of the society gave a special atmosphere to the evening. The little stars prepared dance and musical numbers, filling the meeting with warmth, sincerity and a sense of continuity. It is at such moments that it becomes clear: memory lives not in official speeches, but in families, in children’s voices, in songs, in stories and in those who are ready to listen.

The evening ended with watching the legendary film by the director and screenwriter Leonida Bykova “Only old men go into battle”. This picture has long become not just a war film, but part of the common memory of people who fought, loved, joked, lost friends and still went to Victory.

Meeting at Larisa was another reminder that for the Pontian Greeks of the former Soviet Union, the memory of Great Patriotic War remains part of family history, cultural identity and respect for those who defeated fascism at the cost of incredible sacrifices.
