Ilioupoli declared mourning after the tragedy with 17-year-olds

Municipality of Ilioupoli declared three days of mourning after tragedies with two 17-year-old schoolgirlsone of whom died, and the second, according to Greek media, is in critical condition.

Mourning declared from Wednesday, May 13, 2026By Friday, May 15, 2026. As the municipal authorities said in a statement, this decision was made as a minimal sign of grief, respect and support for the family of the deceased 17-year-old city resident.

On days of municipal mourning, flags on buildings Municipality of Ilioupoli and other municipal facilities will be lowered. All festive, cultural and entertainment events of the municipality are postponed, and municipal services are invited to honor the memory of the deceased with a minute of silence.

The tragedy occurred after two 17-year-old schoolgirls, who were friends, fell from a height from the roof of a multi-storey building. One of the girls died, the second was hospitalized in extremely serious condition. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the competent authorities.

Greek media report that one of the schoolgirls left a letter to her parents. In it, according to published data, she wrote about a severe psychological state that lasted several years, as well as fear of panhellenic exams. The text of the letter, as reported by the media, conveyed a feeling of hopelessness and loss of interest in life.

This detail is especially painful because we are talking about more than just a private family tragedy. Society is again faced with the question of how adults, schools, families, the state and the mental support system notice – or do not notice – a teenager who has been in a state of internal crisis for a long time.

Not just one family’s tragedy

History in Ilioupoli shocked local society precisely because outwardly, teenage life often looks ordinary: school, exams, friends, everyday conversations. But behind this surface there may be a serious condition hidden, which the teenager is not always able to say directly. Sometimes he speaks by hints, sometimes by behavior, sometimes by silence. And too often adults understand this after nothing can be fixed.

Fear of exams in itself should not become a death sentence for a child. But in reality for many teenagers panhellenic exams are perceived as a milestone on which the whole future life supposedly depends. When you add depression, loneliness, the pressure of expectations and the feeling that there is no way out ahead, the usual educational procedure turns into a psychological trap.

Greek society has long debated the workload of schoolchildren, competition, anxiety and the lack of available psychological help. But each such tragedy shows that discussions are not enough. Teenagers need not only test preparation, but also a space where they can talk about fear, despair, fatigue and pain without fear of being judged or ignored.

It is especially important not to turn what happened into an occasion for sensational details. In such cases, the media’s responsibility is not to rehash every detail, but to talk about the risks, the signs of crisis and the need for help. Other people’s pain should not become material for emotional consumption. Surprisingly, this still has to be explained to a world that has learned to broadcast tragedies faster than to help the living.

When you need help

If a person talks about not wanting to live, about complete hopelessness, about being a burden, or saying goodbye to loved ones abruptly, this cannot be considered “drama”, “adolescence” or an attempt to attract attention. This could be a signal of real danger.

In Greece it operates 24 hours a day Suicide crisis intervention line 1018 organizations ΚΛΗΜΑΚΑ. It is intended for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, for their loved ones, as well as for professionals and organizations faced with crisis situations.

In an emergency situation, you must contact 112, 166 or to the nearest medical services. If there is a teenager nearby who has been depressed for a long time, suddenly changes behavior, talks about the meaninglessness of life, or is so afraid of the future that he stops coping, you cannot wait “until it goes away on its own.”

Ilioupoli is mourning today. But after mourning, a question will remain that concerns not only one family and one city: do we know how to hear children in time, when they are still nearby and when we can still help them?
