US Vice President J.D. Vance deleted the publication about the Armenian genocide shortly after his visit to Armenia and before his trip to Azerbaijan, causing a resonance in diplomatic and media circles.
During your stay in Yerevan Vance visited the memorial complex Tsitsernakaberddedicated to the memory of the victims of the massacres of Armenians in 1915–1916. After the ceremony, a video of the visit was posted on his social media account X with the caption:
“Today, Vice President Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Armenian Genocide Memorial to honor the victims of the 1915 genocide.”.

Less than an hour later, the post was deleted. The flight from Yerevan to Baku took about 74 minutes. Already upon his arrival in Azerbaijan, Vance took part in meetings with the president Ilham Aliyev and signed a “strategic partnership” agreement.
In response to a request from CNN, representatives of the American side stated that the publication was allegedly posted “by mistake” an employee who was not part of the official delegation.
The Tsitserναkaberd Memorial was erected in memory of approximately 1.5 million Armenians who died during deportations and massacres in the Ottoman Empire. Türkiyewhich is its legal successor, officially denies the fact of genocide, calling the events “severe consequences of the First World War.”
Azerbaijan, which is Ankara’s key ally in the region, adheres to a similar position.
The United States officially recognized the Armenian genocide as genocide in 2021under administration Joe Biden. At the time, this decision was seen as an important political and moral step.

However, under the current leadership, Washington is once again demonstrating caution in its language, given the strategic importance of Turkey and Azerbaijan in regional politics, energy and the military sphere.
The removal of Vance’s post amid negotiations in Baku was a revealing example of how issues of historical memory and moral responsibility give way to current geopolitical interests.
