Shooting in Anapa and Canada: different countries, similar reasons

The tragic events in Anapa, Russia and Canada have once again shown that violence in the educational environment is becoming an international social problem.

New details of the attack on a technical school in the Krasnodar region allow us to better understand the reasons for what happened.

In Anapa, a student opened fire in the lobby of the Industrial College, using a double-barreled gun taken from a relative. According to Russian telegram channels close to law enforcement agencies, he fired 13 shots.

The attacker was quickly detained. After the incident, he raised his hands and surrendered to the police. The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case.

Governor of the Krasnodar Territory Veniamin Kondratyev reported that as a result of the attack, the security guard of the educational institution was killed, who was the first to take the blow, called the police and prevented the shooter from entering the building. Two people were moderately injured.

According to preliminary data, the attack was committed by a 17-year-old teenager. It is reported that in 2025, he began publishing materials related to attacks on educational institutions on social networks. According to media reports, preparations for the attack could have been going on since at least January.

Among the possible motives, a version of a conflict related to obtaining a diploma and an alleged bribe is considered. However, this information has not been officially confirmed.

It is noteworthy that in August 2025, the technical school conducted anti-terrorism exercises, following which the management reported on the “high readiness” of the personnel for emergency situations.

The incident in Anapa was at least the fifth attack on educational institutions in Russia since the beginning of the year. Previously, similar cases were recorded in Ufa, Krasnoyarsk, Kodinsk and Nizhnekamsk.

A few hours before the tragedy in Anapa, a similar incident occurred in Canadian city of Tumbler Ridge. There, a woman opened fire at a school, killing seven people and wounding about twenty, before committing suicide.

Two more bodies were later found in a nearby apartment building. It is believed that they were also victims of the same criminal.

Experts note that such tragedies in different countries have similar social and psychological causes. Among them are the isolation of adolescents, a crisis of values, insufficient prevention and poor work with risk groups.

The lack of effective mechanisms for early detection of threats, a formal approach to security and a lack of trust in educational institutions create the ground for radical forms of protest.

A comparison of events in Russia and the West shows that the problem is systemic in nature and requires comprehensive solutions at the level of government, education and social policy.
