Editorial opinion
The confrontation between organized fans of different clubs in Greece has long gone beyond the scope of sports and emotional support for teams. In some cases it has turned into a form of street violence with elements organized crimewhere knives, fittings, incendiary mixtures and other dangerous means are used.
Most severe incidents are not spontaneous. We are talking about pre-prepared actions: ambushes, raids on rival areas, arson and targeted attacks.
In fact, many ultras groups function as semi-criminal structures with its own hierarchy, leaders, financing and loyalty system. Sports play a secondary role in this system and serves only as a flag for the struggle for influence and status.
What is particularly alarming is that the bulk of the violence has long since moved outside the stadiums. Arsons of houses, attacks in residential areas, night raids and the hunt for single fans have become part of the urban reality.
Attempts to limit matches without spectators, video surveillance and fines don’t solve the problem. Ultras adapt, go underground and operate outside the sports infrastructure, using social and criminal connections.
Fan groups are fueled social instabilitylack of prospects for some young people and the cult of street violence. For many participants this becomes way of life and way of self-affirmation.
The use of weapons is a natural result of escalation. When one side crosses the line, the other responds in kind. This creates a vicious circle in which each new attack becomes an excuse for the next.
It’s important to recognize: much of the fan violence is unrelated to sports. This is an independent phenomenon associated with criminal processes and built into the urban environment.
Therefore the statement that “the war between fans at times takes on the character of fighting”, is not an exaggeration. In some cases, we are talking about organized clashes with casualties.
As long as the state, clubs and society continue to perceive this problem as “excesses of fans”and not as a form of street crime, the situation will not fundamentally change.
Football and basketball have not had anything to do with it for a long time. We are talking about the safety of cities and whether society is ready to continue turning a blind eye to violence under sports slogans.
