The disaster hits Greece: a 200-meter crack on the highway and flooded areas

Severe weather which hit Greece in the last 24 hours, left behind asevere destruction in the residential sector, business and infrastructure. Intense rainfall caused landslides, floods and serious transport disruptions.

The most significant example was a fault with a length of about 200 metersformed on Ionian Highway as a result of a large landslide.

According to Greek media, due to heavy rains, the ground shifted and a large volume of soil collapsed. Video footage from the scene shows that the slope was literally “cut” into two parts.

The collapse destroyed protective nets and barriers that were carried down onto the roadway. The incident occurred on 127th kilometer trails in the area Sikula.

The situation is stabilizing

At ski resorts in recent hours it has fallen from 30 to 40 centimeters fresh snow. Drivers are advised to use winter tires and snow chains.

Authorities are continuing to assess damage and restore efforts in the affected regions.
