At the World Economic Forum in Davos USA And Europe Once again they exchanged not compliments, but reproaches.
US President Donald Trump sharply criticized the economic, energy and migration policies of European countries, while recalling the possible customs duties and questioning the future transatlantic trade.
Against this background, a question is increasingly being asked in Europe, which until recently was considered almost indecent: isn’t it worth taking a closer look to the side? China? The Chinese market remains for EU second in importance after the American one, and the volume of trade turnover reaches almost 250 billion euros.
In Davos Beijing acted without hints or halftones. The Chinese side openly declared its readiness to expand cooperation, emphasizing that he views Europe as partnerand not as a rival. The message was extremely pragmatic: the Chinese economy is reforming, opening up and welcoming foreign companies.
Economic experts note that China is seeking to take advantage tensions between the US and EUoffering Europe alternative trade and technological links. We are talking primarily about such areas as battery production, robotics And high technologywhich will determine global competition in the coming decades.
At the same time, more restrained assessments are also heard. Some experts emphasize that the problem in Europe is not the choice between China, the USA or India, but weakening of its own economic dynamics. In their opinion, the EU has world-class engineering potential, patents and an industrial base, but it itself limits their development.
Additional skepticism brings risk changing one addiction to another. China does offer cooperation in the fields of defense, infrastructure, energy, healthcare and technology, but there is still no alternative to a European strategy based on diversification of partners.
The conclusion is obvious and inconvenient: TOChina is ready to fill the vacuum created in relations between Europe and the United Statesbut the turn towards Beijing can be neither quick nor one-sided. For the EU, the key remains not the choice of a new “senior partner”, butrestoration of one’s own economic stability and expanding the network of global trade agreements.
