After the storm that happened yesterday off the coast of Crete, on the beach Krios in the area Palaiochora (prefecture Chania) impressive footage was recorded: the sea covered with a thick layer of dense white foam.
Because of storm winds and strong sea waves, the coastal zone was completely filled with foamy masses, which were carried ashore by the raging waves.
As experts explain, we are talking about natural phenomenon, which occurs when intensive mixing of water and transfer organic matter – phytoplankton, algae and decaying biological debris – from the sea to the shore.
With strong waves and gusty winds, the air actively mixes with this organic mass, resulting in the formation thick sea foamwhich then accumulates along the coastline.
Similar phenomena are often observed on the coast of Crete after periods of intense weather with large waves and strong winds and do not pose a threat to the environment.
