In case a trip to Switzerland turns out to be impossible, the head of the Greek government, as specified, will go directly to Brussels to participate in the upcoming European Union summit.
Parallel Greek government closely monitors the processes unfolding around transatlantic relationsagainst the backdrop of the initiative Donald Trump to create the so-called “Peace Council“
According to government sources, inside EU Negative attitude prevails regarding the prospect of participating in this initiative. Most countries – including Greece — express serious reservations and do not intend to support it with their signatures.
The only exception at the moment, according to available information, is Hungary led by Viktor Orbanwhich has already announced its readiness to support the American proposal.
Editorial comment
Officially – bad weather. Unofficially, the absence of Greece at a time when not economic forecasts were discussed in Davos, but new architecture of international agreements.
Today Davos is no longer a forum of ideas, but signal space. And the signals sounded there were extremely harsh: a revision of the role of Europe, pressure on NATO, new formats of “peace” in which participation is not a right, but a tool of influence.
Athens’ decision to toe the line of pan-European skepticism towards Donald Trump’s initiative may look politically correct. However, in reality it is fraught with the fact that Greece will find itself outside the informal circle of discussionswhere future compromises are formed.
History shows: when countries are not at the negotiating table, decisions are made for them. This is especially dangerous for a state located in a region with chronic instability and unresolved security issues.
Against this background Türkiye, demonstrating readiness for dialogue with any centers of power, strengthens its position. It doesn’t look like the source of the problem, but like necessary element of the solution. For Greece, this means an increased risk of pressure under the slogan of “regional stability.”
The European Union, with all its political solidarity, is unable to compensate loss of a direct channel of influence on Washington. Brussels provides frameworks, but not guarantees. But security in the Eastern Mediterranean is still not decided by declarations.
Refusing to participate in questionable formats can be a fundamental step. But integrity without presence is always a weak position. Especially in an era when international politics is once again built on deals rather than values.
For Greece, the risk lies not in the Peace Council itself, but in the possibility of being left on the sidelines of the processwhich will determine the rules of the game for years to come.
In such moments, absence is not neutrality. Absence is a signal.
