ΕΜΥ announced an emergency warning for 36 hours: Athens is also under attack


National Meteorological Service of Greece (ΕΜΥ) issued an emergency warning about deteriorating weather conditions for a period of 36 hours. Bad weather is expected from Wednesday, January 21, 2026and will last until noon on Thursday, January 22.

According to forecasts, Athens will be affected by heavy rainfall on Wednesday during the day and evening hours.

Main characteristics of the upcoming bad weather:

  • heavy rains and thunderstorms from early Wednesday morning in a number of regions of the central and southern part of the country, and in the evening – in the Aegean Sea,
  • heavy snowfall in places in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of mainland Greece, as well as in lowland areas Thessaly And Macedonia,
  • gusty and stormy winds in certain areas.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms predicted:

  • on Peloponnese (mainly in Messinia, Laconia, Argolis and Corinthia) – Wednesday until evening,
  • V Eastern Sterea Hellas and on Euboea – from Wednesday morning until night,
  • V Attica — during the daytime and evening hours on Wednesday,
  • V Thessalyon Sporades And Cyclades — Wednesday afternoon,
  • on the islands northern and eastern Aegean Sea – from late Wednesday evening to Thursday morning,
  • on Dodecanese – until Thursday noon.

The greatest danger is expected in eastern and southern Peloponnese, Atticaon Euboea, Sporadesislands northeastern Aegean Sea And Dodecanese.

Heavy snowfalls forecast for Wednesday:

  • before noon – in the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of the Peloponnese (Arcadia, Achaia, Corinthia),
  • until evening – in the mountainous regions of Epirus and western and central Sterea Hellas,
  • V Thessaly – in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, and in some places on plains,
  • V Western Macedonia – until the evening,
  • V Central Macedonia – during the daytime,
  • V Eastern Macedonia and mountainous areas Thrace – In the evening.

Particularly heavy snowfalls are expected in Western Macedoniaas well as in regional districts Trikala, Karditsa And Eurytania.

Southeast gale force winds of force 8–9 on the Beaufort scale will blow until noon on Wednesday northern Ionian Sea until Thursday morning southern and central Aegean.
