Annual inflation in Greece was 2.6%: coffee, meat and some other goods and services grew much more


Annual inflation in Greece in December amounted to 2.6%follows from the data ELSTAT (Greek Statistical Service). In November this figure was at the level 2.4%.

IN in monthly terms consumer prices increased by 0.3%.

Let us recall that according to preliminary Eurostat datainflation in Greece in December was estimated at 2.9%.

Largest price increase recorded in the following categories:

  • coffee – +20.9%
  • chocolate and chocolate products – +20%
  • meat (in general) – +13.1%
  • air transportation of passengers – +11.9%
  • fruits (in general) – +10.6%

Largest price reduction noted in the following categories:

  • olive oil – -34.1%
  • natural gas – -20.1%
  • audiovisual equipment, computers and repairs – -6%
  • breakfast cereals – -5.3%
  • heating oil – -4.7%

Growth of the general consumer price index by 2.6% in December was mainly due to the following changes in groups of goods and services:

  • Food and non-alcoholic drinks (+3.6%) – an increase in prices for bakery and confectionery products, meat, fresh fish, dairy products and eggs, fruits, chocolate, coffee and fruit juices. Lower prices for breakfast cereals, olive oil and vegetables partially offset the increase.
  • Alcohol and tobacco (+1.4%) – increase in prices for alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.
  • Clothes and shoes (+1.8%) – price increases for all main categories.
  • Housing (+2.8%) – an increase in rental rates, the cost of maintenance and repair of housing, as well as electricity. Lower prices for natural gas and fuel oil partially smoothed out the growth.
  • Durable goods and household services (+0.5%) – an increase in prices for household services with a decrease in the cost of equipment and repairs.
  • Healthcare (+0.4%) – higher prices for medical, dental and paramedical services, as well as hospital treatment.
  • Transport (+1.7%) – an increase in prices for new cars, auto parts, transport maintenance and air tickets. Lower used car and fuel prices partially offset the increase.
  • Connection (+0.3%) — increase in tariffs for telephone services.
  • Recreation and culture (+1.0%) – rising prices for leisure goods, cultural events and travel packages, while prices for electronics are falling.
  • Education (+2.8%) – increase in fees for preschool, primary and secondary education.
  • Hotels, cafes and restaurants (+6.9%) – an increase in prices in restaurants, cafes and confectionery shops, partially offset by a decrease in prices for hotel services.
  • Other goods and services (+0.6%) – an increase in prices for personal care services and health insurance, with a decrease in the cost of car insurance and certain personal care products.
