Taxi drivers in Athens and Attica on January 13 began their 48 hour strike. The strike will last until 6 am on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Last week the union announced on the start of phased strikes until the Department of Transport satisfies its long list of demands.
The main demand of taxi drivers is the government’s decision to oblige them to switch to electric taxis from the beginning of this year.
The union announced that the strike was aimed at protesting “arbitrary and intrusive introduction of mandatory use of electric vehicles in taxis” from January 1, 2026.
“The government once again chooses to legislate, ignoring reality, turning the taxi industry into an experimental platform to demonstrate its capabilities, without a plan, without infrastructure and without social justice,” – noted the trade union.
The SATA union is expected to announce the next staged strike tomorrow, Wednesday.
