UN Security Council will meet on Monday upon request Ukraine after new massive Russian strikes on the country’s territory and Moscow’s use of hypersonicOreshnik missile system. This is stated in the updated program of Council meetings, published on Friday evening.
The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN made a corresponding request Andriy Melnikwho in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Security Council stated that, in the opinion of Kyiv, Russia’s actions indicate “a frightening new level of war crimes and crimes against humanity”directed against civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Russian strikes on the night from Thursday to Friday led, according to Ukrainian authorities, to shutdown of heating in almost half of residential buildings in Kyiv. In this regard, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitali Klitschko urged city residents to consider the possibility temporary departure.
At the same time it was confirmed that Russia for the second time since the start of hostilities in February 2022 used a medium-range ballistic missile system “Hazel”.
“Today, the Russian Federation officially announced the use of a medium-range ballistic missile-carrying weapon called Oreshnik in the Lviv region. This blow is a serious and unprecedented threat to the security of the European continentundermining regional stability and creating significant risks for international peace and security,” Andriy Melnik noted in his address.
Ukraine’s request to convene a meeting UN Security Council was supported six member states of the Security Council: France, Great Britain, Latvia, Denmark, Greece And Liberiadiplomatic sources told AFP.
It is expected that during the meeting the parties will outline their positions on the latest escalation and the possible consequences of the use of new types of weapons for regional and international security.
