Rare appearance of Kim Jong-un’s daughter in family mausoleum: signal of continuity

Leader’s Teenage Daughter DPRK Kim Jong-un made a rare public appearance at the family mausoleum where her grandfather is buried Kim Jong Il and great-grandfather Kim Il Sung. We’re talking about Geumsusan Sun Chamber in the capital Pyongyang.

Experts regarded the appearance of the teenager as another sign that Kim Jong-un may prepare her daughter for the role of a possible successor.

This was the girl’s first officially recorded visit to the family mausoleum. She first appeared in state media photographs in 2022and since then she has been repeatedly seen next to her father at events of high political significance – from missile tests and weapons inspections to last year’s visit by the leader to China.

There is very little official information about the child. North Korean state media never reported the girl’s age or name.

Former basketball player Dennis Rodmanwho met with Kim Jong-un during a visit to the DPRK in 2013, previously claimed that the girl’s name is Joo E (Ju-ae). It is estimated that she is approximately 13–14 years old.

Editorial comment

Publicity in the DPRK almost always means status. It is important not only that the leader’s daughter appears at official events, but also that How she is shown: next to Kim Jong-un, in the central composition of shots and in situations with high symbolic weight.

It should also be taken into account that, according to profile assessments, Kim Jong-un may have more than one childhowever, has been publicly demonstrated in recent years exactly this girl – and it is precisely this circumstance that strengthens interpretations about her special status.
