Video from Loutraki: a shark up to 5 meters long swam to the city beach

Visitors to the resort town Loutraki witnessed an unusual and disturbing scene: near the beach, in shallow waterswas noticed large sharkfreely “floating” just a few meters from the shore.

According to eyewitnesses, we are talking about a predator about 4–5 meters. The appearance of the shark instantly became a topic of discussion: many vacationers took out their phones and filmed what was happening on video.

The videos quickly spread across social networks, including TikTok. The comments under the video turned out to be very different, but the majority are humorous and ironic character.

Nevertheless, experts and local residents emphasize: the situation no laughing matter. In just a few months, the summer season will begin, and thousands of people will once again flock to the beaches Gulf of Corinthas well as on the coast Salamis And Aegina.

As noted, in recent years there has been increase in shark sightings in the waters of the Gulf of Corinth, and more and more often – at shallow depthsin close proximity to bathing areas.

The appearance of a large shark off the coast in winter is not a sensation and not a reason to panicbut not an event that should be reduced to jokes on social networks. Gulf of Corinth and coastal waters Attica – part of the Mediterranean ecosystem, where the presence of large predators has been historically recorded, albeit extremely rarely.

In most of these cases we are talking about planktivorous speciesfirst of all about giant sharkwhich can reach a length of 6–7 meters, stays freely near the surface and sometimes enters shallow water, especially in the cold season. It does not pose a danger to humans.

At the same time, another fact cannot be ignored: About six years ago, a rare sighting of a great white shark was actually recorded off the coast of Attica.presumably a pregnant female, came close to the shore. It was exceptional episodeoutside the swimming season, without people in the water, which attracted the attention of specialists precisely because of its anomaly.

This example is important not for fear-mongering, but for understanding: even species such as the white shark are not “impossible” for Greek waters. However, their appearance near the coast is an event at the level of scientific observation, and not a tourist threat.

Today’s videos from Loutraki rather fit within the framework environmental changes: warming water, shifting food supply, seasonal migrations. Winter, the absence of people and the calm behavior of the animal speak more likely against danger scenariothan in his favor.

Main conclusion: Sharks off the coast of Greece are a signal of the state of the marine environment, not of an impending threat to holidaymakers. Panic is inappropriate here. Observation, information and a responsible attitude towards the sea are appropriate, which, unlike social networks, lives by its own laws.
