Tachycardia after eating: what causes palpitations and when to see a doctor


Many people face tachycardia after eatingand often this is not due to illness, but to the body’s reaction to certain foods or the amount of food.

The heartbeat can be felt in different ways: as trembling, “dips”, accelerated or increased pulse.

Cardiologists emphasize that such episodes are usually harmless if they occur rarely. However, frequent or prolonged attacks may indicate arrhythmiarequiring medical evaluation, especially if they are accompanied by dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath.

Why does your heart rate increase after eating?

During meals, blood is more actively directed to the digestive system, which naturally increases the heart rate. Sometimes the body reacts stronger, and this is felt as a palpitation.

What foods can cause tachycardia

Caffeine. Moderate amounts of coffee rarely cause problems, but large doses or energy drinks with high concentrations of caffeine and taurine can trigger dangerous arrhythmias, especially in sensitive people.

Sugar. Excessive consumption of sweets increases adrenaline levels, which increases the heart rate. It is important to remember that added sugar should not exceed 10% of your daily intake.

Alcohol. Even moderate consumption can cause palpitations, and in people with a predisposition – provoke atrial fibrillation.

Simple carbohydrates. White bread, pastries, pasta and other quickly digested carbohydrates spike blood sugar levels, which can lead to tachycardia, especially in people with diabetes or reduced glucose tolerance.

Tyramine. Contained in aged cheeses, red wine, smoked foods, sauerkraut and soy sauce. This substance temporarily increases blood pressure and may speed up your heart rate.

When to see a doctor

Medical attention is necessary if tachycardia is accompanied by fainting, chest pain, persistent arrhythmia, or increases in frequency. Such symptoms may indicate a heart rhythm disorder that requires diagnosis.

How to reduce the risk of tachycardia after eating

  • Monitor your body’s reaction to specific foods.
  • Avoid large portions and overeating.
  • Limit caffeine, alcohol and sugar.
  • Be careful with energy drinks and fast carbohydrates.

Diet control and moderation help to significantly reduce the likelihood of discomfort after eating.
