Head of the Ukrainian peace negotiations group Rustem Umerov held closed meetings in the USA with the director Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Kashem Patel and his deputy. Reports this with reference to sources The Washington Post.
As the publication notes, these contacts caused concern among Western diplomats, since they took place against the backdrop of a discussion of the American plan to end the war and were of a non-public nature.
According to The Washington Postin recent weeks Deaths flew to Miami three timeswhere he discussed the parameters of a possible peace settlement. In parallel, he held a series of closed meetings with the leadership of the FBI, the goals of which were not officially disclosed.
Some Western officials suggest that similar channels could be used as an instrument of pressure on Kyiv in order to persuade the Ukrainian side to agree to the terms of a peace deal that would include serious concessions.
In the office of the Ukrainian ambassador in Washington confirmed the fact of the meetingsemphasizing that only issues were discussed national securitywhich they say are not subject to public disclosure.
For our part, in Federal Bureau of Investigation stated that the contacts concerned cooperation in the field of law enforcement and general security. A representative of the bureau confirmed that the topic of corruption scandals in Ukraine was raised, however, according to him, she was not the main one.
At the same time, as the publication emphasizes, “Some believe that Umerov and other Ukrainian officials approached Patel and Dan Bongino in hopes of obtaining some kind of amnesty from possible corruption charges they might face.”.
The version discussed in the expert community deserves special attentionaccording to which Rustem Umerov may have US citizenship. According to sources, his family has been living in Miami for a long time. If this information is confirmed, Umerov’s contacts with the FBI go beyond purely diplomatic ones and may also be considered as the interaction of an American citizen with law enforcement agencies of his country.
In this context, meetings with the FBI do not look like political consultations – The FBI is not a political agency – how about a conversation on a plane jurisdiction, financial flows and criminal risksespecially when it comes to possible abuses of American financial assistance.
Let us remind you that FBI actively cooperates with National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) And Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP)who are investigating corruption in the immediate environment Vladimir Zelensky. NABU officially interacts with American structures, and materials on cases related to foreign assistance may come to the attention of American law enforcement agencies.
Against this background, the version that Umerov’s closed contacts with the FBI could be connected not only with peace negotiations, but also with possible audits of the use of US fundslooks logical to some observers. In this case, such meetings could serve personal pressure lever and at the same time a signal to Kyiv that American assistance remains under strict control.
Secret contacts between Kyiv’s key negotiator and US security forces only heighten questions about what kind of agreements are being discussed behind closed doors? and what price the Ukrainian political elite might be willing to pay for a possible “peace.”
