For the first time, Russia simultaneously deployed 8 nuclear icebreakers to the Arctic.

Russia immediately launched the Northern Sea Route eight nuclear icebreakerslaunching simultaneous operations along a key Arctic route. This was announced by the General Director Rosatom (Rosatom), Alexey Likhachev, emphasizing that this is the first time in the history of the country.

The fleet is led by an icebreaker Yamal under the command Marina Starovoitova – the first female captain of a nuclear icebreaker. Likhachev himself noted the significance of the moment, noting that such a composition and the participation of a female commander are “completely unprecedented.”

According to the Tass agency, the operations involve:

  • four icebreakers of project 22220: Arktika, Sibir, Ural, Yakutia;
  • two icebreakers of project 10520: Yamal, 50 Let Pobedy;
  • two Taimyr class icebreakers: Taimyr, Vaigach.

Likhachev also said that the Russian program for building new nuclear icebreakers is proceeding at an accelerated pace, and the number of ships of this class will increase in the coming years. The massive departure of the fleet is interpreted by experts as a demonstration of Russian control over the Arctic, strengthening the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route and preparation for the growth of cargo transportation in conditions of geopolitical turbulence.
