Ukrainian drones attacked Russian oil infrastructure for the first time in Caspian Seadisrupting the operation of more than twenty wells at a large field named after Filanovsky. The information was confirmed by sources of Ukrainian special services, as reported by the Kyiv Post.
The field belongs to the company “Lukoil” and is considered one of the key ones in the Caspian sector of Russia. The oil platform is located at a distance of about 1,150 kilometers from Ukraine, 220 kilometers south of the Astrakhan region, which makes the strike the furthest hit by Ukrainian drones on the Russian energy sector.
According to the report, at least four drones were launched at the site, which allowed the platform to be decommissioned and production stopped at a significant number of wells. This is the first recorded attack by Ukraine on Russian oil facilities in Caspian Sea.
The field contains about 129 million tons of oil and more than 30 billion cubic meters of gas, highlighting the strategic importance of the strike. According to the company itself “Lukoil”by 2021, 30 million tons of oil had already been produced here, and annual production is about 6 million tons.
Possible consequences
The attack demonstrates Ukraine’s growing ability to strike remote targets critical to the Russian military economy. Given the scale of production and the importance of the field, the consequences of the blow could be painful for Russia’s energy balance and its export revenues.
