Under threat of arrest: farmers and fishermen left the port of Volos, but not the fight

After several hours of tense confrontation farmers And fishermen left a commercial port Hair. Formally, because of the prosecutor’s promise to arrest participants in the blockade.

In fact, it was enough for participants in protest actions to show that they can block the city whenever they wantand do not need permission from the authorities, who have long lost control of the situation.

Until this moment, the port remained blocked on two sides: on the land side it was surrounded by tractors and agricultural machinery, and on the sea side it was blocked by fishermen on their spoons. This is an illustration of the unity of people whom the authorities have been assuring for years that their problems are “on the agenda.”

When the prosecutor reminded about the possibility of initiating cases for “movement violation”the farmers responded quite in the spirit of recent weeks: calmly, but mockingly. “We knew that there would be “things” – don’t tell me,” – they said. And they added that the port was actually closed by the police, not them.

Several hours earlier, Volos had been under siege: columns of tractors from Cardits, Larisa, Trikalaand in the port area there are police forces from early morning tried to “reason” with the protestersas if total force had once worked against organized farm blockades.

The fishermen “improved the picture” by firing smoke bombs across the water, turning the entrance to the port into a symbolic battlefield. For a city tired of endless economic pressure, it seemed more like an honest reminder: the real problems are not on the embankments, but in the offices.

It seemed that the authorities no longer understood how to react: instead of dialogue there were police cordons, instead of decisions there were prosecutorial threats. As a result, trucks that were supposed to unload goods were stuck in the area Microtives in a kilometer-long queue.

“If they don’t give a solution, we’ll move on – bridges, ports, wherever”the farmers repeated before leaving. And this is perhaps the main result of the day. Not their temporary concession, but calm confidence that they are ready to block the country again – and not just one.

So the port of Volos opened today. But the political knot that the government itself is tightening is not. No one even tried to untangle him.
