AAΔΕ presented detailed instructions on the transport tax for 2026, which every car owner is required to study. The deadline for timely payment ends December 31, 2025and late payment entails fines of up to 100% of the tax amount.
The department’s explanations provide a wide list of situations that often raise questions among motorists.
Highlights
Transfer of ownership. If the car is for sale, The seller must pay transport tax for the current year. If documents for transfer are submitted at the end of the year, and actual registration takes place in the next year, then the tax for the year of transfer the previous owner still pays.
Condominium. Despite the issuance of notices to each co-owner, payment is made once. In this case, all participants remain jointly and severally liable for the debt.
Change of license plate. The paid tax is automatically attached to the new number, and no debt arises.
Akinisia* and proportional tax. Starting April 1 of each year, owners can pay tax based on the number of months of use. However, if at the end of the period the car is not manually transferred to akinisia, AAΔΕ automatically puts him on forced akinisia.

AAΔΕ answers to common questions
- About tax when selling a car. The tax is paid by the seller, including the year of transfer, if registration is completed in the new year.
- Co-owners. One payment is enough, but the responsibility is joint and several.
- Change of number. No repayment required.
- When no tax is charged. If the vehicle is in a state of disrepair before the start of the new tax year.
- Consequences of non-payment. The fine is charged depending on the type of vehicle and the period of delay.
- Insufficient data message. Correction of registration information in the transport department is required.
- Error by AFM owner. You should check the correctness of the AFM and, if necessary, contact the transport service or preschool educational institution.
- Payment due upon first registration. Tax for the year of registration must be paid on the next business day after receiving the number.
- Payment of proportional tax. This is done through myAADE, where the number of months of use is selected.
- End of the proportional tax period. To renew, you must pay for the remaining months; If the car is not sent to Akinisia on time, it is installed automatically.
*What is akinisia – “mode of parking/non-use of the car”
That is, the owner officially declares to the state: “I don’t use the car, I won’t drive, I don’t want to pay tax.”
In this mode:
- the car must not be driven under any circumstances;
- rooms are usually kept or rented (depending on the year and format of the akinisia);
- transport tax is not charged;
- To return the car to the road, you need to reapply and pay tax for the whole year or proportionally.
In short, it’s not “just parked”and a full-fledged legal status – the car seems to exist, but to drive it “prohibited by law”.
