Greek Coast Guard patrol vessel Λ.Σ. 615 village on stones on the outer breakwater of the port Hair in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to the captain, the cause was a strong cyclone and extremely limited visibility: northeasterly winds of force 4–5 and thunderstorm conditions actually made it impossible for the crew to maneuver safely.
The boat was returning from patrol within United European Operation Poseidonwhen landing on the stone barrier occurred. Immediately after the incident, all four crew members were given a breathalyzer test – the results were negative.
The captain of the ship was detained, but was soon released by order of the prosecutor’s office. No one was injured as a result of the incident, no fuel leaks or sea pollution were recorded. The vessel was promptly raised and towed to assess its technical condition.
Investigation and enforcement actions
Volos Key Estuary Administration is conducting a preliminary investigation and has notified the prosecutor’s offices of Piraeus and Volos. In parallel, the 4th Regional Administration of the Liman Guard appointed official investigation (ΕΔΕ) to establish all the circumstances of the accident.
What is known from early reports
Local media reported that the LS-615 vessel planned to transition to Skiathosto transport the icon of the Mother of God Iconistra, found in Volos a few days earlier. It is not yet known why the boat ended up at the point where it collided with a rock ledge.
Coast Guard forces and technical specialists arrived at the scene to inspect the hull and organize the safe evacuation of the vessel from the breakwater. According to experts, the boat received local damage, but its nature and extent will be determined during a technical examination.
