The Kremlin welcomes the new US strategy – what has changed?

Deputy Head Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedevwho had previously repeatedly threatened USA and the West with nuclear weapons, unexpectedly positively assessed the new American national security strategywhich calls for establishing relationships with Russia and sets as a key goal the end of the war in Ukraine.

According to Medvedev, “The Americans continue to train the distraught European Union” and seek to remind their allies “who is the true owner of the circus.” He stressed that for the first time in many years, Washington is openly talking about the need to restore “strategic stability” V Eurasia and resume dialogue with Moscow.

Medvedev noted that the document Russia was called not a “threat”, but a participant in a potential dialogue, and also drew attention to the language regarding NATO. According to him, the strategy actually implies stopping the expansion of the alliance, while Ukraine in the context of further expansion is not mentioned at all.

“The strategy unexpectedly rhymes with what we have been talking about for many years: security must be shared, and the sovereignty of states must be respected… Now the window of opportunity for dialogue is ajar,” – Medvedev said.

Previously Kremlin also called the American document constructive, emphasizing that any hints of rapprochement between Washington and Moscow are assessed in Russia as a potential opportunity to reduce tensions.

The American security strategy is widely discussed, since its provisions could significantly affect the course of the conflict in Ukraine and prospects for future negotiations.
