By the end of the year in eight key locations Attica new ones will start working smart camerasdesigned for automatic recording of violations Traffic rules.
The pilot installation covers major highways, including Panepistimiou And Vasilissis Sophias Avenueas well as important crossroads in the municipalities of Agia Paraskevi, Rafina – Pikermi, Kallithea, Voula – Vouliagmeni, Alimos, Eliniko – Argyroupoli and Filothea – Psychiko.
Eight camera installation points
- Athens: Panepistimiou & ave. You. Sophias
- Agia Paraskevi: ave. Mesogion & Ave. Chalandriou
- Rafina – Pikermi: ave. Marathonos & st. Fleming
- Kallithea: ave. Siggru & st. Agias Fotinis
- Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni: ave. Posidonos & st. Ermu
- Alimos: ave. Posidonos & Ave. Alimos
- Eliniko – Argyroupoli: ave. Vouliagmeni & st. Tina
- Philothea – Psychico: ave. Kifisias & st. Ethnic. Antistaseos
The cameras will be installed in high-risk areas and connected to the new information complex, which should be fully operational by Easter. The system will record serious violations: running a red light, speeding, not wearing a seat belt, using a phone while drivingas well as driving in the emergency lane.
Digital fine management
The central element of the reform will be Unified electronic system for registration and processing of violations (E.H.S.)administered by the Ministry of Digital Governance. The platform will combine data from street cameras, mobile devices and other monitoring tools, providing automated recording and processing of materials.
Entries will contain photos, videos and time codestransmitted in encrypted form. Citizens will receive notifications via digital account on gov.gr or SMS and will be able to file electronic objections.
Statements from the Minister of Digital Governance
Minister Dimitris Papastergiou emphasized that the law “On Digital Strengthening of Road Safety” is aimed not only at simplifying procedures, but also at protecting human life: “Every life lost on the road reminds us that inaction is unacceptable.“
He noted that the system ensures transparency and accountability, allowing for the rapid confirmation of violations, eliminating paper bureaucracy and strengthening control over dangerous driver behavior.
The future of traffic control
Total planned to install 2,500 camerasof which 2,000 are in stationary sections, and 500 are in buses to control dedicated lanes. In parallel, the Attica region will add 388 proprietary cameraswhich will also be integrated into E.H.S.
The system uses license plate recognition technology based on artificial intelligencewhich will allow faster identification of violators. Digital confiscation of driver’s licenses will occur automatically after certain types of violations are recorded.
The new model, according to the ministry, will reduce the burden on the police, increase the collection of fines (currently less than 10% in the first year), strengthen citizens’ trust in the authorities and create a new culture of road safety.
Editorial note: what happened to smart cameras before
In recent years, the Greek authorities have repeatedly announced the introduction of “smart” cameras with artificial intelligence, which were supposed to automatically record violations and transmit data to digital services. However, previous attempts never reached full implementation in practice, limiting themselves to testing.
The main reasons for the delays were:
- lengthy tender procedures and frequent changes in technical specifications,
- difficulties with integrating existing municipal camera networks into a single mechanism,
- legal and technical obstacles related to the protection of personal data,
- lack of a unified digital platform for processing and sending fines.
Unlike previous years, the current project has a stronger institutional basis. A unified equipment standard has been approved, Unified electronic system for registration and processing of violationseight pilot testing points have been identified and contracts with suppliers have been signed. This is the first attempt that is accompanied not only by a political announcement, but also by the actual installation of equipment.
