Cyclone “Byron” continues to cause serious destruction throughout Greeceaffecting both the railway connection and the road network. Company Hellenic Train announced the cessation of train traffic on the section Larisa – Lejanakladi due to river overflow Enipeasthe water of which overflowed its banks and flooded the infrastructure.

According to Hellenic Train, train traffic on the line Λάρισα – Λειανοκλάδι temporarily suspended for safety reasons due to the overflow of water from Yenipeas creates a risk of undermining tracks and damaging equipment. Passengers are advised to monitor updates and, if possible, avoid traveling in the affected area until the situation stabilizes.
The decision to suspend flights is due to the ongoing rainfall accompanying Cyclone Byron, which has already caused flooding and significant problems in neighboring regions.
Central Macedonia: flooded roads and blocked traffic
Central Macedonia also faced serious difficulties due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Byron. Flooding has been recorded at many points of the regional road network, and a number of sections have been declared impassable.
IN Pieria traffic on the provincial road has been stopped Kondariotissa – Dion in the area of Vrondus junction. Problems persist on the municipal road from New Ephesos to Kondariotissa, as well as in the areas of streams “Zilliana” And “Kandir“in Leptokarya. Regional authorities report that all hazardous areas are marked with appropriate signs, and warning boards inform drivers to avoid driving through flooded areas until safe traffic is fully restored. Civil protection and road services are on high alert, assessing damage and planning work to clear and restore infrastructure.
Cyclone Byron has already shown how vulnerable Greece’s transport network remains to extreme weather events: from railway lines to Thessaly to key roads in Central Macedonia. Authorities warn that traffic restrictions could be extended if heavy rainfall continues.
