European Commission found itself at the center of criticism after the publication of a new version of the map in the publication “Ανακαλύπτοντας την Ευρώπη“for December 2024.
on her Dodecaneseas well as islands eastern Aegean depicted in the same gray color as the territory Turkeyactually going beyond Greek jurisdiction. This display is puzzling given that in the 2020 edition these same islands were designated as part of Greek territory.
The reason for the scandal was the reaction of a European deputy Giannis Maniatiswho discovered the discrepancy and immediately contacted European Commission with an official request. He pointed to the map identifier (ISBN 978-92-68-19677-9), compared the editions and emphasized that in the new version there was a fundamental change in the color coding of the islands.
In a public statement, the politician noted that such an “erroneous” display cannot remain without explanation, since it is distributed in “tens of thousands of copies” around the world and shapes the idea of administrative boundaries EU. Maniatis demands immediate correction and guarantees that similar situations will not happen again.
Special attention was drawn to the fact that even the islands Ionian Sea in the new version, the maps are displayed in gray, as if they are not connected with Greek territory at all. This raised questions about the methodology for preparing the publication and the quality of control on the part of European structures.
In a post published on social networks, Maniatis emphasizes that the change in color designation between 2021 and 2024 seems inexplicable and requires a detailed investigation. “I have already submitted a corresponding request, demanding explanations, corrections and guarantees that such “mistakes” will not be repeated“,” he said, accompanying the publication with two versions of the map for comparison.
