China sends a clear signal to Washington
Beijing has called on the United States to abandon any military action against Venezuela amid the increased presence of American troops in the Caribbean. Washington calls this an operation to combat drug trafficking, while China and Caracas view it as pressure on the sovereignty of Venezuela.
China has invested more than $60 billion in Venezuela since 2007, and its largest state-owned companies control key stakes in the country’s oil sector. This year alone, Venezuela is supplying China with almost two hundred thousand barrels of oil per day, despite sanctions.
Given such high risks for Beijing, any unrest in Venezuela deals a direct blow to China’s strategic and economic interests.
Will President Trump continue to escalate this confrontation?
At this scale, any tension in Venezuela directly threatens China’s economic and strategic interests.
Meanwhile, the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro accuses the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in hypocrisy and connections with the president of Ecuador, where, according to Maduro, the main flow of cocaine to the United States comes from:
