Road tax 2026: new fines and strict deadlines without extension


More 4 million car owners must pay τέλη κυκλοφορίας (road tax) 2026 to December 31and this year there are no extensions of deadlines. Payment notifications are already posted on the platform myCAR της ΑΑΔΕ.

Being late, even by one day, will result in automatic penalties. There is a bonus in January 25%in February – 50%and from March the fine reaches 100% tax amounts. The minimum fine is 30 euros.

The tax amount is determined by the year the car was first registered, engine displacement or emission level CO₂. Cars registered before October 31, 2010 are taxed by volume, and after November 1, 2010 – by emissions. Environmentally friendly vehicles are completely exempt.

Examples of charges

Vehicle up to 10/2010:

  • 1,200 cc cm – 135 euros
  • 1.600 cc cm – 280 euros
  • 2.000 cu.m. cm – 690 euros

Vehicles registered from 1.11.2010 to 31.12.2020 are calculated according to emissions: from 0 euros (0–90 g/km) to 3.72 euros per gram of CO₂ for emissions above 251 g/km.

For cars from 2021, the tax is €0 for emissions up to 122 g/km and up to €2.85 per gram above 281 g/km.

Late fees

The fine system has become noticeably stricter:

  • Payment in January: +25%
  • In February: +50%
  • From March: +100%

For example, with a debt of 100 euros, the total amount will be 125 euros in January, 150 euros in February and 200 euros from March.

Digital akinisia

Owners who do not intend to use the car in 2026 can apply for digital akinisia* through the platform myCAR until December 31, 2025.

Required:

  • availability of a parking space – own, rented or provided;
  • consent of all co-owners (if the car is shared ownership).

Using a car declared as stationary entails a double fine of the tax amount and an administrative fine of 10.000 euros. In case of repeated violation, the fine reaches 30.000 eurosand the driver’s license is confiscated for three years.

The new system is aimed at strengthening tax discipline, reducing arrears and moving towards complete digitalization of processes for vehicle owners.
