On the island Rhodes a 40-year-old man in a cassock was detained, claiming to belong to Old Calendar Church of Greece. He is accused of transportation 2 kilograms pure cocaine.
According to the publication Dimokratikithe detainee is a Greek citizen living in monastery in Attica. He arrived on the island by plane, having previously sent his suitcase with an elderly woman, allegedly at the request of a “trusted monk.” The woman was unaware of the contents of the luggage and handed it over to the “monk” upon arrival.
Policehaving operational data, established surveillance and conducted detention at the baggage transfer point. Two packages of highly purified cocaine weighing a total of 2,188 grams were found inside.
Who received cocaine – Albanian channel
Was later detained 38-year-old Albanian citizenwho was supposed to have received the drug for distribution on the island. He was considered final point in the delivery scheme.
Both detainees were taken to Athens to participate in the wider investigation criminal organizationwhich the authorities had tracked earlier. The investigation is being coordinated with Athens investigative structures.
Investigation version: monasticism as a cover
According to investigators, the 40-year-old used religious status to reduce suspicion and free movement between regions. Its role could be that of carrier with a low level of risk.
The investigation is looking into whether the 38-year-old Albanian had access to sales and a stable customer base on the island, and whether the shipment was part of a regular supply chain between Athens and Ρόδοс.
For now experts carry out laboratory analysis seized substances, and also decipher digital data from phones and applications to establish the degree of involvement of the defendants and other links in the chain.
