Road tax 2026: who will be exempt from paying


Vehicle owners in Greece can already see their notifications by road tax 2026published on the website ΑΑΔΕ. However, some citizens this year exempt from payment – in whole or in part.

The payment deadline is set at December 31, 2025. Amounts can be deposited once or in parts until the end of the year without penalties.

How is tax calculated?

The amount of road tax depends on date of first registration of the car and him technical characteristics.

  • For cars registered until October 31, 2010 – calculation according to engine volume.
  • For cars after November 1, 2010 – By CO2 emissions.

Full exemption for green cars

The main change concerns “green” transport. Vehicles registered with January 1, 2021 and having CO2 emissions up to 122 g/kmare completely exempt from payment. This category includes:

  • Electric cars
  • Plug-in hybrids
  • Self-charging hybrid cars

Also, similar benefits apply to cars produced during the period 2010–2020 with emissions up to 90 g CO2/km.

Social exemptions

Persons with disability have the right to complete tax exemption, upon decision of the head of the relevant tax service (ΔΟΥ). In case of minors, the benefit can be transferred guardianbut only for one vehicle.

Benefits apply to citizens with severe diagnoses, including:

  • complete paralysis or blindness,
  • mental retardation,
  • β-thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia),
  • sickle cell anemia,
  • end-stage renal failure,
  • autism with severe manifestations.

Special provisions apply for war veteransmilitary and security forces, as well as participants national resistance. For paralyzed or disabled citizens 100% disabled The use of vehicles with a large engine capacity is permitted.

Important Terms

To receive the benefit you must:

  • be sole owner of the car,
  • do not have another vehicle with a similar benefit.

After the death of the owner, the exemption ceases, and the heirs are required to pay tax on beginning of next year.

Thus, eco cars And socially vulnerable citizens remain among those who will be able to travel without additional tax burden in 2026.
