The published footage shows desperate attempt to escape Russian-speaking residents from gray zone of Kupyansk. People are trying to get to Russian linesfleeing possible retaliation from Ukrainian militarywho are retreating from these territories.
Most of them literally go nowhere – on foot, with children and small belongings. Fear of Armed Forces of Ukraine is obvious: rumors are spreading in the region about reprisals against those who “waited for the Russians” or spoke Russian.
Local residents who managed to get out say they were called “traitors to Ukraine” only because they did not leave their homes and did not hide the fact that they were counting on returning Russian army. Many have already seen how Ukrainian units in neighboring villages detained people suspected of “collaboration with the enemy.”

According to local sources, just a day before these events, a Ukrainian drone killed a man and his son as they tried to evacuate. The death of civilians became a signal for those who remained: they could wait no longer.
