The legendary presenter of “Morning Mail” Yuri Nikolaev has died.

According to the SHOT Telegram channel, Nikolaev died at home after a sharp deterioration in his health. He last received treatment in October for breathing problems.

Journalists note that the TV presenter struggled for a long time with severe lung disease. In November 2024, he was already admitted to intensive care with a diagnosis of “pulmonary edema”. Sources say the complications were caused by long-term consequences of smoking and chronic lack of oxygen.

Illness and last years

Several years ago Nikolaev was diagnosed lung cancer. He was treated in hospitals several times, and in 2024 he suffered hip surgery after the fall. Then he became seriously ill coronavirus. According to the recollections of colleagues, in recent months the TV presenter had lost a lot of weight and had difficulty moving, but remained in touch with friends and continued to be interested in television.

Yuri Alexandrovich Nikolaev was born December 16, 1948 in Chisinau, then Moldavian SSR. From his youth he was interested in the stage, music and working with the public. His television career began in Soviet erawhere he quickly became one of the most popular presenters on Central Television.

Since 1975, Nikolaev has hosted the program “Morning Mail” – a cult musical project that united viewers throughout the USSR. After the collapse of the Union, he founded his own studio “UNIX” and started the transmission “Morning star”which ran from 1991 to 2003 and became a springboard for many young artists.

Later he worked on federal channels “Russia” And “Channel One”hosted programs “Dancing on Ice”, “Dancing with the Stars”, “Big Change” And “Property of the Republic”. In 2017 he became the host of the program “Honestly”.

Family and background

Yuri Nikolaev’s family was closely connected with security forces of the USSR. His mother, Valentina Ignatyevna, served as a captain KGBand father, Alexander Silvestrovich, was Colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The TV presenter’s grandfather, according to Nikolaev himself, was repressed and fled abroadwhere he later settled in Canada and left the family a large inheritance, which his mother was forced to abandon due to her service in the authorities.

The TV presenter who never aged

Despite illness and age, Yuri Nikolaev remained active and friendlyhosted holiday broadcasts and took part in public events. His colleagues call him “a man who always had a scene in his eyes”.

His death became a symbol of the passing of an entire era – a time when television was not yet divided into “propaganda” and “show”, but simply conveyed joy millions of viewers.
