Epilogue

Tragedies like the murder of a fan in Chalkisdon’t happen suddenly. This is the result of many years of silent compromise between the state, clubs and society. Fan groups – not just fans, but entire structures with money, hierarchy and influence. They cannot simply be “banned”: they have long been part of the football and political ecosystem.

The state prefers to observe, the clubs prefer not to anger their own “ultras,” and the police intervene only when blood has already been shed. For the authorities, such groups are a kind of social valvea way to release society’s aggression under control. Young people fight not with the system, but with each other. But this convenient self-deception results in lost lives.

Every new fight, every name on the police report is a reminder that violence in the stands has long ceased to be a sport. While the authorities pretend that everything is under control, a generation is growing on the streets for whom the “honor of the club” is more important than human life.
