The deal consolidates preliminary agreements reached in July. The manufacturer is a consortium with participation UK, Germany, Italy And Spainwhere the leading role is played BAE Systems. The implementation became possible after reports of a softening of the position Germany under export permit for Turkey.
The negotiations discussed the sale of fighter jets Eurofighter Typhoon as part of a broader Turkish Air Force renewal architecture. Last week, Erdogan held consultations in the Gulf countries about the possible involvement used sides from Qatar And OMAN.
Ankara considers the purchase of Eurofighter as intermediate solution before the commissioning of the fifth generation national fighter KAAN. In parallel, Türkiye, remaining a member NATOseeks reinstatement of participation in the program F-35from which it was excluded in 2019 due to the acquisition of systems S-400.
According to Turkish officials, the target fleet upgrade configuration includes up to 120 aircraft: 40 Eurofighter, 40 F-16 American made and 40 F-35 as a “transition park” to the production stage KAAN. A signed package for 20 Typhoons opens the first phase of this strategy.
