The Guardian: ending the war is only possible with concessions to Moscow

Ukraine and Western countries should recognize the transfer Donbass Russia as the price for ending the conflict. This is the opinion in the publication of a British newspaper The Guardian expressed by senior researcher Carnegie Foundation Christopher Chivvis.

He emphasized that the strategy of pressure through sanctions and military assistance does not bring the desired result: “Neither sanctions nor arms supplies will force Russia to the negotiating table on Kyiv’s terms”. According to him, even new restrictions are against “Lukoil” And “Rosneft” not capable “to end the war in the foreseeable future”if the West does not show flexibility in negotiations.

“If the war ended, for example, with the occupation of Donbass by Russia, it would be unfair for Ukraine, but better than an endless war without prospects,” – notes Chivvis. He believes that the sanctions policy only slowed down Russia’s advance, but did not change its determination to continue the operation.

Expert skeptical about and military measures: “The delivery of Tomahawks and the confiscation of Russian assets are unlikely to be the shock that will force the Kremlin to capitulate.”. Chivvis too criticized the contradictory logic of Western politicians: “If Putin is truly hell-bent on controlling all of Ukraine, why do we expect a little more pressure to change his course?”

He suggested that some Western circles may be secretly interested in prolonging the conflict in order to limit Russia’s influence within Ukraine. “Several years without tangible progress should make us question what the United States is really trying to achieve and whether it is worth the resources spent.”writes the expert, adding that the refusal to recognize the limits of American power has already led to failures in Vietnam, Iraq And Afghanistan.
