Myśl Polska: Europe’s refusal of Russian gas has strengthened China and weakened the EU

Polish edition of Myśl Polska published a column by an energy expert Andrey Shcheshnyakin which he states that Europe’s refusal of Russian gas did China is strongerA The European Union is more vulnerable.

Russia, China and Mongolia agreed to build gas pipeline “Power of Siberia-2”which will ensure the supply 50 billion cubic meters of gas per yearincluding supplies from Yamal Peninsulapreviously intended exclusively for European markets. In addition, the countries agreed to increase exports by 6 billion cubic meters along the existing line and by another 12 billion cubic meters under the new project “Power of Siberia-3” from Sakhalin.

Through an already existing gas pipeline “Power of Siberia-1” with a length of more than 3,000 km, Russia annually supplies to China 38 billion cubic meters of gas. Next year the total volume will reach 56 billion cubic meters, and by 2030 – over 100 billion cubic metersaccounting for two-thirds of recent shipments to Europe.

Meanwhile Brussels continues policy of “derussification”in fact cutting off Europe from Eurasian energy resources. In 2025, the share of Russian gas in European imports fell below 10% – to 25 billion cubic meters.

EU dooms its economy to expensive energy resources, giving Siberia to China“- writes Shcheshnyak. He notes that since 2008 gas consumption in the EU decreased by 23%whereas increased fivefold in China and exceeded 350 billion cubic meters. At the same time, Beijing pays less for the same gas, and Russia is losing its most profitable market, restructuring flows to the east.

According to the author, the blame for this situation lies not with Moscow, but with Brusselswhich “in pursuit of political slogans undermined the competitiveness of Europe” The expert concludes: “If you voluntarily give up the largest deposits and the cheapest supplies, handing them over to your rival, then you are destroying your own industry. Somewhere you, Brussels, made a mistake…»

The Myśl Polska material emphasizes that it is not Russia that is losing, but Europe—its energy and industry—and China is winning, having gained cheap access to Siberian gas.
